Student Stays Home Sick, Foils Burglary

The Des Plaines Police Department provided the following report

Ferris Bueller stayed home sick from school and Kevin McCallister scared off two burglars when he was Home Alone, but a 14-year-old Des Plaines boy managed both at the same time Thursday when he prevented an attempted break-in at his home.

Earlier:

were dispatched for an attempted burglary report in the 800 block of Spruance Place at 9:14 a.m. on Jan. 26. According to the report, a 14-year-old boy told police that he was home from school because he was feeling sick, when he observed a red pickup truck circle the block three times before pulling into the driveway of his home.

Two white men then exited the vehicle. One, described as a six foot tall man with medium build with curly brown hair, made his way toward the back door, while the other, described as a 5-foot-11 inch man of a skinnier build in his late 20s with medium length brown hair, went to the front door and attempted to open it.

The boy said he was looking out the front window in an attempt to write down the truck’s license plate number when the man at the front door saw him. Both men ran back to the truck and began driving north on Spruance Place. According to the report, the truck was last seen heading east on King Lane toward Mount Prospect Road.

An elderly neighbor said he, too, had seen the red truck and also witnessed the man approach the boy’s front door. The neighbor added that the pickup truck had a white sign on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
