Teen Hit, Killed by Car While Walking Home

Emily Weyers, 18, was walking home from work at about 9:49 p.m. Monday when she was hit and killed by a car on Algonquin Road west of Oakleaf Road in Lake in the Hills.

Weyers was pronounced dead at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. Weyers was hired a few months ago as a deli clerk at Joe Caputo and Sons Market in Algonquin.

Having just graduated from Dundee-Crown High School in May, the Lake in the Hills teenager had big plans for her life: she was preparing to attend DePaul University next month and aspired to one day become an attorney.

The youngest of five Weyers children, Emily was described as a vibrant, fun-loving girl by her older brother, Joe.

"She was a free spirit, and she loved helping others," Joe Weyers said. "She was a very good person, she had a good heart, and she loved being an aunt to her four nephews."

Skokie

Sex Trafficker Sentenced

A sex trafficker was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison Wednesday, in a case which Skokie police helped to break in 2007, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

The defendant, Erik Shamsud-din, 46, of Oregon, pleaded guilty in May to interstate prostitution. Federal authorities said in late 2006, he trafficked two adult women and a 16-year-old female runaway, forcing them to engage in prostitution in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. He then brought them to Illinois in 2007 with the intent of further prostituting them, according to court records.

On Jan. 27, 2007, Skokie police responded to a fight between the minor and an adult victim.  The minor was rescued and Shamsud-din was arrested, which later resulted in the federal charges in Chicago, according to a DOJ statement.
