Mug’s Pizza Catches Fire, Updated

Fire Chief: A "significant" fire was extinguished at Mugavero's Pizza & Ribs on Central Road Wednesday morning. The fire started in the kitchen, according to investigators.

The fire at Mugavero’s Pizza & Ribs in Des Plaines started in the kitchen, according to fire investigators.

Des Plaines Fire Chief Alan Wax stated in an email to Patch that the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s investigators and the insurance company’s investigators are working on determining the ignition source.

Des Plaines firefighters extinguished a fire at , early Wednesday, according to a report from Fire Chief Alan Wax. There were no injuries reported in a blaze that caused extensive damage to the restaurant, as well as smoke damage to other businesses in the strip mall, Wax stated.

The fire department was dispatched to the scene at 5:09 a.m. on Oct. 3, arrived approximately six minutes later, and extinguished the flames within 20 minutes, Wax stated.

“Fire crews did a great job of containing the fire to the occupancy of origin and extinguishing it quickly,” Wax stated.

Investigators are working on determining what caused the fire and what was its point of origin, Wax stated. The fire caused extensive damage, and Mug’s will be closed for an extended period of time, Wax stated.

The other businesses in the strip mall will be able to re-open after cleanup and power and gas are turned back on, hopefully just a couple days, Wax stated.

Estimated property loss has not been determined yet.

Two engines, two ladder trucks, three ambulances and a shift commander responded from the Des Plaines Fire Department, Wax stated. An engine from Mount Prospect Fire Department and a ladder truck from Niles Fire Department were also dispatched to the scene. During the incident an engine from Wheeling Fire Department and an ambulance from Glenview Fire Department provided coverage at the Des Plaines fire station.
