Monday Blotter: Trespassing at the Casino, Drinking in Public, More

Criminal Trespass to Property

Police responded to a trespassing report at Rivers Casino, 3000 S. River Road, at 8:48 p.m. on March 9. According to the report, James M. Faris, of Burr Ridge, was issued a citation for trespassing after entering the casino. Faris is on the self-exclusion list.

Police were dispatched for similar trespassing reports at 11:44 p.m. on March 9, when, according to the report, Kelli L. Jackson, of Rockford, was issued a citation for trespassing, and at 4:19 p.m. on March 10, when, Steve Peszek, of Chicago, was issued a citation for trespassing.

The Illinois Gaming Board began the Statewide Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program for Problem Gamblers in 2002, according to the Illinois Gaming Board’s website. It allows people who are problem gamblers to self-exclude themselves from Illinois casinos for a minimum of five years.

Gene O’Shea, Director of Self-Exclusion for the Illinois Gaming Board, individuals can petition to be removed from the list after five years, but no one has ever succeeded in this.

Anyone on the list who tries to enter a casino may be charged with criminal trespassing, a misdemeanor crime that results in a $500 fine with the possibility of up to 180 days in jail.

Minor in Casino

Police responded to a report of a minor in Rivers Casino, 3000 S. River Road, at 4:09 a.m. on March 10. According to the report, Syed Alman Ali, 20, of Villa Park, allegedly presented an Illinois state identification card that belonged to his older brother. Ali was issued a citation for minor in casino and escorted off the property without incident by security personnel.

Drinking in Public

While conducting a premise check at the Metra depot, 1501 Miner St., at 4:31 p.m. on March 11, police smelled alcohol on a man sitting on a bicycle. According to the report, Esteban Vargas-Anda, 52, of Chicago, was holding an open can of Bush beer in his knit hat. Vargas-Anda was transported to the police station, issued a citation for drinking in public and released.
