Monday Blotter: Arrest Follows Much Disobedience

Alleged drunken man found loitering at bus station ignored police warnings in endangering himself.

The Des Plaines Police Department provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

According to the report, police discovered Dennis M. Bohannan, 45, of Park Ridge, sleeping on a bench near the bus cue. Police reported Bohannan appeared extremely intoxicated as they pointed out signs at the depot that warned against loitering.

Bohannan became agitated and told police he was at the depot in order to catch a bus to go to work. He then pointed toward a bus and said he had to go. Police reported Bohannan swayed as he walked off. He then turned away from the buses and attempted to cross the street during heavy rush-hour traffic.

Earlier:

Police warned Bohannan if he walked into the street, they would arrest him for being intoxicated in the roadway. Bohannan began yelling and walked toward the buses. He passed all the buses and began walking southbound on Lee Street from Miner Street, waving at police.

Police located Bohannan at Lee and Prairie streets as he began to walk into the roadway at Prairie. He was again warned of being arrested if he walked into the roadway.

Bohannan shouted profanity and reportedly said "I can do whatever I want!” in response to police asking him why he didn't get on the bus. He then stepped off the curb into the three-lane roadway and began to cross in the 700 block of Lee Street into traffic.

When police ordered him to the curb to make the arrest, Bohannan began jogging away. Police caught up with him, but Bohannan eluded them momentarily and tried to run northbound. That was when police reported tackling and wrestling with Bohannan as he resisted attempts to handcuff him.

Bohannan was eventually charged with criminal trespass to property, being an intoxicated pedestrian in the roadway and resisting a peace officer. He is scheduled to appear at Skokie courthouse Sept. 9.
