Man Threatens to Stab Woman, More in Tuesday Blotter

The Des Plaines Police Department provided the following reports.

Aggravated Assault, Battery, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, Violation of Bond

Des Plaines police responded to a man with a knife report at an apartment building on the 500 block of Seegers Road at 6:49 a.m. on Oct. 30. When police arrived they saw a man, later identified as Brendan Hubly, 23, of Wilmette, walking down the driveway to the apartment building crying and yelling, “I didn’t do anything.”

Hubly came to the apartment building at approximately 3 a.m., according to a witness, to get a ride. The woman drove him to a gas station to buy cigarettes, the report states. At approximately 5 a.m., Hubly and the driver returned to the apartment and Hubly noticed his cell phone was missing.

Hubly accused the witness of stealing his cell phone, according to the report, and began rummaging through the apartment. When Hubly was asked to stop making a mess in the apartment he put his closed fist against the woman's left cheek and pushed her backwards, the police report stated.

Police stated that Hubly then picked up a knife with a wooden handle and a gold hand protector from a dresser in the apartment, and said, “I’ll slit your throat if you don’t give me back my phone.”

The witness told Hubly that she did not have his cell phone, after which Hubly said he would stab her, the police report stated.

Another witness told police she was sleeping in her room at the time of the incident, and when she heard the commotion and got up to see what was happening, the police report stated. When the second witness heard Hubly threaten to stab the other resident, according to the report, she took the knife out of his hand and put it away. She tried to calm Hubly down, but he retrieved the knife and began waving it around again and threatening the first witness again, the police report stated.

The second witness told police, according to the report, that she then took the knife out of Hubly’s hands a second time and put it away.

When police attempted to speak with Hubly, according to the report, he said, “I’m not saying anything to you except I didn’t do anything.”

At the police station the Illinois Department of Corrections issued a warrant for Hubly for violating his bond.

Hubly was charged with aggravated assault, battery, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and violation of bond. He was given a court date of Nov. 2 at Skokie courthouse.

Attempted Theft, Criminal Damage to Property

Police stated a male subject, described as having a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair, 5-feet 10-inches tall, 175 pounds, 20-25 years old, wearing black track pants and a red, long-sleeve pullover shirt, entered a jewelry store on the 1500 block of E. Miner Street between 2:25 p.m. and 2:31 p.m. on Nov. 3 and asked about a Rolex watch in a display case.

The man said he needed to make a phone call and left the store, according to the report. When he returned, a witness told police, he removed a hammer from his pants leg and struck the top glass of the display case six or seven times, but was unsuccessful in breaking through the glass.

A witness in the back of the store, according to the report, yelled at the man, “Get out of here!” The man exited the store through the front door, according to the report, ran west to the entrance to Metropolitan Square, and then rand northbound.
