House Fire a Total Loss, Firefighter Goes to Hospital with Minor Injury

The structure was engulfed in flames when first responders arrived on the scene.

The responded to a structure fire report in the 200 block of Grove Avenue, west of Big Bend Lake, at 3:03 a.m. on Thursday. According to the report, a two-story single family home on Woodland Avenue was discovered fully engulfed in flames.

When firefighters arrived, neighbors said nobody was living in the house, said Chief Alan Wax.

The structure is a total loss, with very preliminary estimates of loss placed at $425,000. One firefighter received minor injuries and was transported to Lutheran General Hospital, evaluated, and released.

Cause of the fire, which took more than an hour to put out, is still under investigation. The instability of the structure due to fire damage has made access difficult, and is adding to the time to conduct the investigation.

Wax said investigators had worked at the property all day.

“First, they had to pump out the basement of water,” Wax said. “It’s slow going.”

It was not immediately clear if the house was for sale.
