Friday Blotter: Woman Caught Stealing Wallet At Mystic Waters
Woman first observed stealing July 1, caught stealing again July 4.
The following items are taken from the Des Plaines Police Department. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Disorderly conduct
July 5: Police were dispatched to the 700 block of Elmhurst Road for a report of disorderly conduct. According to the report, the victim told police at about 2:30 p.m. she was stopped for a train with her daughter near the 600 block of Algonquin Road. She told police she left a lot of space between her vehicle and the vehicle in front of her in order to stay in the shade due to a medical condition. A white male, approximately 50 years old, approached her vehicle and cursed at the victim and used racial slurs. The victim gave police the offender’s license plate number.

Theft
July 4: Police responded to a report of theft at Mystic Waters at the 2000 block of Miner Street. An employee at the water park told police he saw the offender reach into a patron’s bag and remove a wallet. The victim saw what happened and yelled at the offender, who then put the wallet back into the bag and walked away. The offender, Katherine M. Vergis, 33, of the 1300 block of Estes Avenue in Chicago, was taken to the police station where police found a stolen credit card in her bag. The credit card was reported stolen to employees at the water park July 1. Vergis was charged with theft and is scheduled to appear at Skokie courthouse July 29.

Burglary to vehicle/Criminal damage to vehicle
July 3: Police responded to the 100 block of Westmere Road for a report of vandalism. According to the report, an unknown offender slashed three of a vehicle’s tires while parked on Farthing Lane sometime between 11:30 p.m. on July 2 and 2 a.m. on July 3. The front passenger seat was also cut and the windows no longer worked, according to the report.
Criminal damage to motor vehicle
July 6: Police responded to the 800 block of E. Oakton Street July 6 for a report of vandalism. According to the report, an unknown offender used a concrete paver to shatter the windshield of the victim’s vehicle sometime just before 1 a.m.
Theft
July 6: Police were dispatched to the 1700 block of White Street for a report of theft. According to the report, a girl’s bicycle was stolen from the side yard on the south side of the house sometime between July 4 at 6 p.m. and July 6 at 6:50 p.m.
Possession of cannabis/possession of drug paraphernalia
July 6: While conducting a traffic stop for failure to where a seatbelt near the 200 block of Mount Prospect Road a little after 7 p.m. police detected the strong odor of burnt cannabis emitting from the vehicle through the open window. According to the report, police recovered two glass pipes and a bag with 1 gram of cannabis. Michael P. Nicholas, 21, of the 90 block of E. Millers Road, was charged with failure to wear a seatbelt, possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is scheduled to appear at Skokie courthouse July 28.
