Friday Blotter: Basement Window Pushed in, Trespassing at the Casino, More

Burglary

Police were dispatched for a burglary report in the 1900 block of S. Illinois Street at 11:14 p.m. on March 27. According to the report, sometime between 10 and 10:45 a.m., an unknown offender removed the outer glass to a basement window, and pushed open the window, knocking over a box with screws and loose change. A check of the rest of the house did not reveal anything missing at the time.

Illegal Transportation of Alcoholic Liquor, Minor Consumption of Alcohol, No Driver’s License, No Valid Insurance, One Headlight

Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a burnt out headlight in the 1500 block of S. Lee Street, at 11:31 p.m. on March 26. According to the report, as the officer made contact with the driver, later identified as Dyvi Nmi Ortega, 19, of Chicago, Ortega placed something on the floor behind the driver’s seat.

Ortega told police, according to the report, he did not have a driver’s license or insurance, and mostly speaks Spanish.

A search of the vehicle revealed a half-empty can of Icehouse beer behind the driver’s seat.

Ortega was issued a Zero Tolerance warning to motorist, and was given a breath test, which, according to the report, revealed he had a blood alcohol content of .168, which is more than twice the legal limit.

Ortega was charged with open alcohol, minor consumption of alcohol, no driver’s license, no insurance and one headlight. He was given a court date of May 1 at Skokie courthouse.

Trespassing

Police responded to a trespassing report at Rivers Casino, 3000 S. River Road, at 12:11 p.m. on March 27. According to the report, Nick Garris, of Elgin, was located in the casino and identified as being on the self-exclusion list.

The Illinois Gaming Board began the Statewide Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program for Problem Gamblers in 2002, according to the Illinois Gaming Board’s website. It allows people who are problem gamblers to self-exclude themselves from Illinois casinos for a minimum of five years.

Anyone on the list who tries to enter a casino will be charged with criminal trespassing, a misdemeanor crime that results in a $500 fine with the possibility of up to 180 days in jail.

Garris was issued a citation for trespassing, warned not to return and escorted off the property.

Trespassing

Police were dispatched for another trespassing report at the casino for another person on the self-exclusion list at 5:40 p.m. on March 27. According to the report, Judith A. Bazzett, of Arlington Heights, received a citation for trespassing and was escorted to her vehicle without further incident.

Minor Prohibited from Entering Casino

Police responded to a report of a minor at Rivers Casino at 1:09 a.m. on March 28. According to the report, John Paul Valencia, 18, of Norridge, was issued a citation for minor prohibited from entering the casino after Valencia allegedly used a family member’s identification to enter the gaming venue. Valencia told police, according to the report, he knew what he did was wrong.
