Des Plaines Officer Recognized for Saving Child

Des Plaines police Sgt. Dan Shanahan was recognized for the actions he took to help a choking 2-year-old.

Shanahan answered a call at an Ash Street residence of a child choking on June 27. The child was unresponsive and not breathing when Shanahan arrived. Shanahan administered the Infant Heimlich Maneuver and was able to clear the child's airway, a press release from the city stated.

The child began breathing on his own and regained consciousness. Des Plaines Paramedic personnel transported the child to Lutheran General Hospital where he was treated and released, the press release stated.

Shanahan was presented with a Life Saving Award by the city for his efforts.
