Des Plaines Man Charged with Assault, Domestic Battery After Police Standoff

A Des Plaines man faces several criminal charges after a six hour standoff with police ended with tear gas being used by officers.

Michael Werner, 38, was charged with domestic battery, assault and endangering the life of a child. The standoff began after police responded to a domestic battery call at about 6 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of W. Eaker Place.

Police said that a 31-year-old woman told them that Werner had hit her and their one-year-old child. She also said Werner was threatening to shoot himself and had several guns in the house, police stated in a press release.

Negotiators spoke with Werner for about six hours before the decision was made to tear gas the residence. After tear gas was used, Werner surrendered to police and was taken to Northwest Community Hospital.
