Community Comes Together For Des Plaines 9/11 Memorial

Local businesses, organizations donate time, money, goods.

Several local businesses and organizations are to thank for the construction of the new 9/11 memorial that will stand outside City Hall in Des Plaines soon.

The base of the memorial is a 114-pound steel beam that was left behind in the debris after the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center. The Des Plaines Fire Department were one of 1,200 groups that applied to receive a piece of the wreckage.

donated the stone that the memorial is mounted on, donated a piece of granite, donated a plaque for engraving, will pour the granite for the footing, provided the clear coat seal, American Legion Post 36 donated $250 toward construction and Firefighter Steve Foster welded the connection points on the beam.

The monument, which will weigh more than 2,000 pounds, will be unveiled the morning of Sept. 11 in front of City Hall, 1420 Miner St.

Deputy Fire Chief Ron Eilken said that the ceremony will most likely take place around 8 a.m. Patch will keep readers posted.
