27 Dead in Connecticut School Shooting

Local and state police in Newtown, Conn. were called to an elementary school at about 9:30 this morning after a gunman allegedly opened fire at the school.

NEWTOWN, CT -- Connecticut police said Friday afternoon that 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at an elementary school after a gunman opened fire. Another adult was killed at a second location.
The Scene

Police in Newtown were called to the Sandy Hook School at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call Friday morning. Authorities said the gunman was found dead inside the school. He was reportedly armed with four guns and a high-powered assault rifle. Authorities said during a press conference that they have retrieved three weapons from the scene.

A parent interviewed on CBS News told the network on Friday that his 8-year-old daughter said she heard an argument and cursing over the school’s loudspeaker, apparently coming from the principal’s office. Her teacher then immediately locked the classroom door as a safety precaution. A fourth-grade student at Sandy Hook School told Connecticut’s Channel 7 that he and his classmates were “locked in a closet in the gym” to escape the gunman.

One mother of an 8-year-old girl at the school, Brenda Lebinski, told Patch that her daughter is safe thanks to one teacher's decision to move all kids into a closet when the gunman entered the building.

The Shooter and His Family

The shooter, identified as Adam Lanza, attacked the Sandy Hook School where his mother, Nancy Lanza, worked as a kindergarten teacher. Media reports initially identified the shooter as Adam's 24-year-old Ryan Lanza.

Nancy was found dead in her Newtown home. According to reports, the shooting took place in her classroom. Eighteen children were killed at the scene, while two were taken to the hospital where they later died. The school’s principal, Dawn Hochsprung, also was among the six adults killed.

National Response

The shooting, one of the deadliest in U.S. history, has once again touched a nerve about the country’s gun violence.

During a press conference Friday afternoon, President Obama visibly wept, saying "We’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.”

The president also said “our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors, as well. For as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children’s innocence has been torn away from them too early."

I really need to stop responding...but..you have threatened to beat me up on quite a few threads. You told...I think Stevie...not to shoot me because it would set back the Conceal Carry cause, not because he wanted to kill me. You make up stories about who I am and what I believe. You claim that I want people to think my opinion is the only truth when you are the only one who who gets mad at those who disagree with you. You desire so strongly to believe that I hate all those groups you mentioned when anyone who reads what I write will clearly see otherwise. You want reasons to dislike me...and that's fine. I can't change who you chose to be and represent online. If you want to pretend that beating me up will solve all your issues...fine. If it helps you sleep at night hating me because of things you make up. Fine. I'm glad to help. But I'm done answering your posts and responding to the lies you continue to perpetuate about me. It's asinine that you can't engage in a conversation with someone who doesn't agree with you on all issues and when they don't, you make up information and resort to likening them to prostitutes and even being so mature as to make fun of my mom. When you learn to have an open discussion we can try this again. Until then have a lovely time only talking to those who agree with you.

300 milion population. 10% mentally ill. No way to detect or treat them. A vular, shallow, violent divided culture. Stats are pretty good this stuff is going to happen. The US may have passed its zenith and now it is every man for himself. I personally do not go anyplace where there is a crowd and now parents will be reluctant to send kids to school unless it is at an armed fortress. Many historians believe that Rome fell because of many stupid mistakes over time.

Good Brian you can go hate America somewhere else! Thank you!

Please stop spreading your ignorance. It's sad that you think guns are the problem. what data did you use to come to that conclusion? The problem is that the culture is changing for the worse with the liberal indoctrination of kids in society through public education and political correctness run amuck. As an example, you cant teach right and wrong in public school because it's "religion" morals are out the window, you can't criticize gangster rap because it's "expression", abortion is ok though because it's "her choice". Why then if a pregnant woman is killed can the killer be charged with 2 murders? Culture rot and the lack of respect for human life is what we need to be concerned with going forward. The liberal arguement holds no water here. It's a tragedy that 20 kids were murdered, but millions get aborted in the name of liberal choice in what would be considered a more violent way. Abortion is the killing of your own offspring, if that is supported and even encouaged, what do you expect with regard to respect for human life? Very sad.

I was just going off of preliminary reports that I heard saying he was found with three guns...but we all know how facts in these stories change from day to day. I know that the majority of people that own guns like that aren't out to get anyone. I guess what I am really saying is that I don't get why it means so much to gun owners that they have these types of weapons...so much so that they are willing to concede that high magazine "assault type" guns may be used in these types of massacres just to keep them in your possession. Only having been a recreational shooter, I don't understand that attachment. I know it may not be the best way to do it, but I feel that sometimes concessions should be made on certain things to better the society we live in. I feel this is one of those times. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, and that's fine. I am just putting my opinion out on one way to bandage this massive problem we have had brewing over the past few years. The guns need a person, but the person also used the guns.

I didn't read this far down. Noted.
Brian L. December 16, 2012 at 12:52 AM
Really not helping much. And you don't know any of the backgrounds of the victims except that it sounds like his mother taught him about guns and how to shoot. Try not to marginalize a gun control argument about stopping this by talking about how other innocent people should be killed.
Abigail December 16, 2012 at 03:39 AM
Ok, here's an idea. Instead of taking guns away from lawful gun owners, why don't we lock up all of the people with mental problems so they don't have access to weapons? This would have stopped the last three attacks.

I am very sad to hear this and upset about young children lost their lives and teachers and princple. It is shocking news. It could happen anywhere in small villages, cities and big cities too. I do hope Crystal Lake teachers are preparing for any crisises in case. We think we know neighbors & friends well but we don't.
jeff December 16, 2012 at 02:42 PM
Real brilliant Its his moms fault? wow! These guys are nuts get it through your head! Its not a gun issue.
jeff December 16, 2012 at 02:44 PM
At least we still have the right and always will to protect ourselves and our family's from people like you.
Brian L. December 16, 2012 at 03:14 PM
That would be great. So how do we start doing that effectively since it isn't working now? At least talking about gun control we have ways to go about it and it might dip the violence a little bit. Not a cure, but one step towards lowering our staggering number of gun deaths.
Lake Forest resident December 16, 2012 at 04:38 PM
Amid all the sadness, grief, and search for reasoning... the only thing I can think of is that people aren't born to hate.
Me December 17, 2012 at 07:43 PM
@Abigail - By all means! We should lock away anyone who presents a possible threat to the mainstream. It is far more important the we are all armed to the teeth so that we can repel any threat, real or imagined. The rights of those who are locked away are dwarfed by my right to own a weapon of my choice.

Fact: 60% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they knew the victim was armed. 40% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they thought the victim might be armed.123

I don't want to get into where you got your survey results from since you only deal in facts, but if they are convicted felons, that means they still committed a crime against someone. So didn't the concealed carry just push the crime to someone else?
jeff December 19, 2012 at 06:56 AM
Direct from LE! Pushed the crime to someone else? Huh? Why did all the gun crimes and violent crimes drop in states with CC? Sure some guys went oh shit that guy looks like he might be packin and went to the next victim but the rate dropped if you don't like it leave our country! I know you don't like to hear that because guys like you get off when a sliver of a fraction of people get killed by guns from Responsible gun owners so you can say told you so! lol You lost you have no leg to stand on.

Fact: Deaths and injuries from mass public shootings fall dramatically after right-to-carry concealed handgun laws are enacted. Between 1977 and 1995,54 the average death rate from mass shootings plummeted by up to 91% after such laws went into effect, and injuries dropped by over 80%

Brian lets make are gun laws like movies! Idiot!
Brian L. December 19, 2012 at 05:18 PM
Starting our dance again jeff? Before you call me an idiot repeatedly, you should double check your word choices...are and our, two different words with two very different meanings. And how do we get movies from what I said? Wouldn't movies be more like what we have now? Many characters have guns, shoot them all the time, with generally no repercussion. That is why many on the pro gun side look to Hollywood to help change the way people see guns. Not as something to be brandished and used everywhere, but as a tool of the responsible. Before you respond keep in mind that I don't mind that you disagree with me. All I ask is that you formulate your opinion and give me reasons you want things a certain way. Calling me an idiot, making "back of the bus" jokes about my mom, general insults....they don't move your case forward. Also, if you want to tell me something is a fact it would be nice to have some sort of evidence to back it up. I don't know your personal sources. They might be right, but evidence is generally needed to convince people.
Brian L. December 19, 2012 at 05:57 PM
Jeff, no one is ever killed by responsible gun owners (except in defense cases). Once the previously responsible gun owner decides to kill innocent people, they have become a completely irresponsible gun owner. Add that to the straight up criminals who keep shooting each other (ie. gangs, career felons, etc) and you have a lot of people using guns to hurt and murder. I don't have time right now to delve into all your numbers, but in looking at the page your FACT information from, it does have some good numbers. I'll cite it for you. http://www.gunfacts.info/pdfs/gun-facts/5.1/gun-facts-5.1-screen.pdf I'll read through them today and go from there, as I still keep an open mind about gun control. I can already see though that to prove some of their facts they use a large range of years instead of comparing direct year against year in other countries. Some of their FACT quotes are also followed by the word estimated, which is not really a fact. The 60% of felons quote you gave says it was from a 1986 survey....very current. They also cite the FBI site frequently, which you told me was all lies and falsehoods. So yeah, I'll read it all and go in open minded and remember what you told me about government sites only spreading lies.
jeff December 20, 2012 at 06:42 AM
I know the difference Cryin Brian this is patch and I could care less about my grammar. That's all you have? Don't you have a veteran to go pick on or a teacher? How about successful business owners? I get my FACTS from family and friends in LE something you wouldn't know about. When did I say I want things a certain way?? You obviously want things your way or you wouldn't write a book to everyone that posts on here. I don't need to give a complete American hating douche bag like yourself reasons for anything. Now you want evidence to convince people? I thought you liked everyone's opinions? Oh thats right you only like yours you fucking cry baby! Tell your mom I said hi!
jeff December 20, 2012 at 06:52 AM
See there you go again you have to research everything anyone has ever put on here so it meets your approval I didn't say anything I get from a website is fact you do. If its something that I believe in I'll pass it along. I do get real live info from people at least once a month or more on some very staggering statistics like I mentioned before about the illegal criminals on the other post. Your already ripping on gunfacts because there findings dont work for you thats because nothing works for you. When your done with your research go fuck yourself and flush out your mom she's full again!
Brian L. December 20, 2012 at 01:00 PM
Such a smart guy you are, and so friendly as well. I guess I was wrong and you didn't want to chat anymore. I still love you jeff.
Brian L. December 20, 2012 at 01:17 PM
Jeff, chatting with you is like chatting to a middle aged child. I don't expect you take what I put as blind truth, which is why I link to my stats so you can look at them and decide if you believe them or not. You're even getting mad after I said that there was some staggering numbers on there that I wanted to look at more. I'm not ripping on it because it doesn't agree with me, I'm ripping on how the extrapolate some of the data they use. Not all of it by any means, but using survey results and saying they are fact doesn't work. If surveys were 100% accurate than Romney would have been president now according to a few of them. You have to take surveys with a grain a salt. You see, what I'm doing is looking for common ground and somewhere to meet in the middle. What you're doing is telling me it's only black or white and I'm a moron/prostitute/America Hater/idiot...anything else?. Guns or no guns. That's just not true. I'm telling you jeff. Just relax. You can pretend we're on the school bus where the other children laugh at your 6th grade insults all you want, but it's just a message board for people to give and discuss their opinions. I said it once before, but when you're ready to act like the accomplished adult that you say you are, I'd love to keep chatting.
jeff December 21, 2012 at 06:30 AM
Brian, You analyze everything anyone has ever posted on here you get off on it somehow. You even tell people what to do with their kids now! Im not surprised you want to get involved with that seeing is how your not allowed to be with in 500 ft of a school.
jeff December 21, 2012 at 06:33 AM
Aww poor Brian your mad again.
Brian L. December 21, 2012 at 01:13 PM
Your posts are getting more enigmatic. Are you trying to imply that I have been arrested for inappropriate actions with children? That's quite the serious accusation and extremely inappropriate, but I would expect nothing less from you. I have no reason to believe that you aren't what you say you are, but I'm amazed that you had a business in 50 states and however many countries when you treat people like this. Maybe you aren't this polite in person...who knows. Your comments insulting everything about me here aren't going to make me sad, won't make my opinion invalid, and won't make you a "real man." It's online chatter and you just sound like a bitter person who can't accept that someone else isn't lock step with him. But you should be careful throwing around your childish insults. Not everyone will read your comments with a smile and write them off as childish drivel like I do. You might actually push someone over the tipping point. You don't want to change gun culture, and that's fine. You've had some valid points but you should work on changing other things instead. Politeness goes a long way. So jeff, still love ya, have yourself a merry Christmas and a great New Year. (ps...keep in mind that it is OK to proofread your insults.)
