Des Plaines-based dog rescue is in the running to win a $5,000 grant to help care for abandoned and abused dogs in Cook County.
Roll Over Animal Rescues dog Darcy, is one of 25 dogs who made it to the finals out of 400 entries and is vying for the $5,000 prize in Wahl’s Facebook Dirty Dogs Contest. Darcy, a dog rescued by ROAR, is the online face of the non-profit group hoping to help win money for the organization that saved him, his litter mates and his mother from being euthanized at a public animal shelter.
ROAR is a non-profit rescue group dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and careful re-homing of dogs of all breeds. They take in animals that have been abused, abandoned, injured and sometimes just moments from being euthanized. They have a network of fosters who care for them in their homes until they can place them in forever homes. This grant money is greatly needed to help pay for their medical bills, rehabilitation and training.
Darcy was lucky enough to be born while in the care of one of their foster homes along with his six other litter-mates. His mother had been abandoned while in the final stages of pregnancy. ROAR stepped up and brought her home, where, just two days later her pups were born. Darcy was the runt of the litter and was born with a crooked tail and funky looking ear. He was considerably smaller than his litter-mates and got picked on a lot. At 7 weeks of age he was discovered sleeping all alone in the food bowl with a major injury to his eye. After rushing him to Animal 911, they confirmed that he had fractured the facial bones under his left eye. Based on the extent of his injury and the length of time it took for the swelling to go down, Darcy is now blind in that eye. Even after all this, Darcy is the sweetest dog ever.
The family that fostered Darcy entered this Facebook contest which gives ROAR a chance to win the grant to fund the rescue of more animals like Darcy.
