Dr. Jane Westerhold, Associate Superintendent Paul Hertel, Plainfield Principal
Guillermo Heredia, Plainfield 5th Grade Students Marlene Tapia, Ruby Patino and Bryan Gomez,  Acting Mayor Mark Walsten shoveled dirt onto the school’s newly planted tree acknowledging the day that celebrates trees “as a source of joy and spiritual renewal. “  Prior to the planning, coordinated by the City’s Public Works and Engineering Department with School District 62, an assembly was held at which time students sang a song about trees and Acting Mayor Walsten read a proclamation stating, “In 1872 J. S. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees.”  The City of Des Plaines has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for 26 years.  (pictured left to right) Acting Mayor Mark Walsten, School District 62 Superintendant Dr. Jane Westerhold, Associate Superintendent Paul Hertel, Plainfield Principal Guillermo Heredia, and Plainfield School 5th Grade Students Marlene Tapia, Ruby Patino and Bryan Gomez plant a Linden Tree outside Plainfield School in honor of Arbor Day.  (Not pictured, but assisting with the planting were Public Works and Engineering Department Crew Leader Matt Tarver and Maintenance Operator Bob DeGeorge.)
