Reader Submission: Can You Identify This Bird?

'Cause we can't, but it seems vicious to us! (Is it eating a squirrel?!)

These photos were submitted by Des Plaines resident Sandy Schillinger:

"Just thought I'd share some pictures with Patch of a bird we just saw in our backyard. It found some dinner in the neighborhood so people better be careful with their very small dogs. We'd like to know what it is and why it has a number on it. Maybe one of your readers may know?"

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, http://BuzzSave.com

yes a hawk, but why the number? I spotted this on Maple by Howard on the South side.

My daughter saw a similar bird near Howard and Mannheim, on the fence by the sledding hill. She didn't mention the number, though, maybe it was facing away from her; I bet the number is a tag from some kind of bird sanctuary or preservation group. Fascinating, what a beautiful animal.

Good to hear other people in the vicinity saw the bird. We are near Touhy and Maple (where the picture was taken). Several other people have told me it's a red tail hawk. Still no definite answer on the number though.

I believe the aldermen are Denise Rodd south of Dempster and Dick Sayad north. Contact them.Read More Although I do not live in Rodd's ward (Im in the 8th) I am somehow on her mailing list and she keeps wanting to know what she can do for me. Here is something.

I suggest contacting the alderman to raise the profile of what these streets need.
