Electronic Billboards May Come to Des Plaines Oasis

Advertisers say billboards will drive traffic into oasis, not a safety hazard.

Electronic billboards may be coming to the interstates and Illinois Tollway, according to an article at Chicagotribune.com.

The Federal Highway Administration and Illinois Department of Transportation approved permits to mount the 41-by-12 signs along five of seven oases. Advertisers say the billboards will drive traffic into the oases and Tollway Chief Engineer Paul Kovacs said an independent motorist safety study will be conducted once the billboards are in place.

The Illinois Tollway still needs to approve the proposal. No date has been set for approval yet.
