Department Of Motor Vehicles: The Happiest Place On Earth (Part II)

Remember when you got your license? Take a trip down memory lane and join a 16-year-old on her first trip to the DMV in the second installment of a 3-part series.

In our last installment of Jessie was just about to meet her driving instructor...

I pulled up the car, almost effortlessly I would like to add, and I pulled in between the orange cones like I had been told. I waited for someone to come out, and when she finally did, I was so excited. She asked me to roll down the window, so I did, and she inspected the car to make sure that everything was working correctly. She got back in the car and I rolled my window up, and she snapped at me and told me that she didn’t tell me to close it. Okaaaaaay.

She told me the test was easy and to remain calm, so that took a little bit of the pressure off. Then, she told me to take a right, so I did. Then, she said that I would be going straight for a while, and at the intersection I would take another right. So, there I was, going straight for a while and she yelled, “I said take a right!” By “a while,” she meant about ten feet, and when she said “intersection,” she meant the intersection in the parking lot. How was I supposed to know that? "Great," I thought, "I am off to an impressive start." (Not really.)

The parking lot curved so I followed the curves and at the stoplight I was to take a left onto the main road. So I did, and she told me to follow the car in front of me (since they were taking the driving test too). When she said, “follow the car in front of you,” I assumed that meant to follow the car in front of me - it didn’t. She scolded me when I went I asked if I should get into the right lane since the car in front of me did, but she said no, I can go when she tells me to. "Follow the car in front of you, but don’t follow the car in front of you."  WHAT???

The second I got out on the main road, she yelled at me to go faster; I thought I was doing fine since I was going 33mph in a 35mph zone.  I stayed at 35mph exactly, and she kept telling me that I was going much, much too slow. I couldn’t believe it! If I am not mistaken, a speed limit is the fastest you are allowed to go, and here she was telling me to go above it, I didn’t know what to do. Then I thought, maybe she is just testing me, but I don’t think so since all she did was ride me about it. Lord, help me.

She told me to pull into the parking lot and park away from the car that was also taking the test, so I did and I did fine. She then asked me to pull out so that the front of the car was facing north, and uh, I didn’t know which way was north. I told her I didn’t know, she sighed and told me we were currently facing east so I thought, "Never Eat Soggy Waffles," and I knew which way to go.

I was told to go back the way the way I came, therefore I did. I am not the best at turning, and let me tell you, she made sure that I knew it. Every turn I took, she would yell at me and tell me I was going much too slow. On the way back to the lot, she told me I really needed to step on it (I was going 35mph) because I was on the verge of not passing.

The entire rest of the ride was extremely tense and stressful. All I could do was try my hardest to correct everything she told me and then the test would be over soon. I pulled back into the parking lot and she told me to find a parking space so I did. As I turned off the car, she asked if this was the car I was used to driving, and I told her that I had been driving my mom’s Ford Expedition (which is HUGE compared to the tiny Hyundai I was driving). She looked shocked and said that I should not drive big cars because I am not good at it and I don’t have enough control. There was a lump in my throat and all I could manage to get out was, “Okay."

So did she pass? Stay tuned for the conclusion of this story Tuesday!
