Parks Playbook: Let's be green!

Our children live in a world where environmental issues such as global warming, organic farming, and recycling exist all around them. In order to conserve a green, beautiful earth to live on, it is very important to begin teaching children at a young age the importance of cleaning up the planet and living responsibly. So let’s get started!

On Saturday, April 26 DEEP Green (Des Plaines Environmental and Energy Program) and the Des Plaines Park District will host the annual, free Earth Day Youth Fair. Join us at Cumberland Terrace from 1:00-4:00pm and learn the importance of the three Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle. We have great activities planned for the whole family. Decorate a reusable lunch bag; plant a bean; make a leaf for the Dream Tree; sample honey and chat with a beekeeper; take a nature-inspired scavenger hunt; build a castle with recyclable materials; visit with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and learn how to keep our waterways clean and safe; have your bicycle checked for summer riding; learn about recycling cans as a fundraiser for your school; meet the dogs from Roll Over Animal Rescue, ROAR, and learn about animal adoptions; and receive a free Black, Pin, or Red Oak to plant in your back yard.

Come for an hour or stay all afternoon and learn to make a difference. Cumberland Terrace is located at 426 S. Warrington Road. This event is free and there is free parking (or ride your bikes.) No registration is required. For more information about specials events, programs, and classes at the Des Plaines Park District, visit www.DPParks.org or call 847-391-5700.
