Week 3: $5 or Free at Your Des Plaines Park District

As we roll into August there are still many things to do and see for $5 or free at the Park District: movies, sports, fishing and more.

As we roll into August, there are still so many things to do and see for $5 or free at the Park District.

1. Join Kermit, Fozzie, Gonzo, and Miss Piggy in a race to save their old theatre on Friday, August 3 at the Lake Park Memorial Pavilion. This is the last Free Friday Night Movie in the Park for the summer, sponsored by the Des Plaines Optimist Club. Bring a blanket, buy some popcorn (only $1), and settle in for a night of fun! The Muppets movie starts at dusk, around 8:30pm.

2. Have you always wanted to say, "I caught a fish that was thiiiiiiis big?" Well, now you can. Fishing is free at both Lake Park in beautiful Lake Opeka, and in the retention ponds at Prairie Lakes Community Center. Both are teeming with an array of hungry dwellers. Grab your rod, reel, and go.

3. Too hot for outdoors play? Get in some basketball practice in the air-conditioned gym at Prairie Lakes Community Center. Youth play for $3 and adults play for $5 everyday except on Tuesday and Thursdays, when the open gym fee is half priced! Score.

4.  Volleyball your game? On Thursdays, from 6-9pm, Open Volleyball in the air-conditioned Prairie Lakes gym is $5. Play for just $3 with your high school ID. Ready, set, spike!
