Des Plaines Park District Campers Travel to L.A. One Chapter at a Time

The Des Plaines Park District has introduced a new summer reading program, Reading Trip USA, at all of their summer camps.

The Des Plaines Park District has introduced a new summer reading program, Reading Trip USA, at all of their summer camps. From July 19 until August 17, park district campers will earn one mile for every chapter they read at home or at camp. The goal is for each camp to read 2012 chapters during the six weeks and make their way across country from Des Plaines, Illinois to Los Angeles, California. “We are encouraging our campers to read this summer, not only because it is fun, but also to help them be ready for school to start,” said Karyn Roth, Recreation Supervisor. “When each Camp has traveled the 2016 miles, they will get to celebrate with a pizza party.,” she said

“Books are available to check out at camp and we are also encouraging campers to get a library card at the Des Plaines Public Library,” Roth said. Des Plaines Public Library cards are free, and librarians are always available to help children chose books. The library is located at 1501 Ellinwood Street. For more information about the library, call (847) 827-5551.

So we went, down, down
Down, on the road to L.A.
Through the hills and
The towns, towns, towns
On the way to the bay
And the wheels, they
Went round, round, round
Through the night and the day
Just some Park District campers
On the road to L.A.
