Photo of the Day: Good Friday Shrimp Run

Dozens of customers from Des Plaines and surrounding suburbs flocked to Don's Dock for fried shrimp on Friday.

Like community clockwork, dozens of residents from Des Plaines and other suburbs swarmed the fish counter at , 1220 E. Northwest Highway, on Friday. Catholics celebrated Good Friday on April 6, and many do not eat red meat on Fridays during Lent, which occurs over the six weeks leading up to Easter.

The signature dish is fried shrimp, and everyone Patch spoke with was waiting for an order of them.

Cathleen Tite, of Park Ridge, said coming to Don’s Dock for seafood on Friday was “just a classic.”

“It just kind of brings me back,” Tite said.

Ken Arendt, of Prospect Heights, said he ordered a pound-and-a-half of fried shrimp for his family.

“Most of it will be gone by the time we get home,” Arendt said.

Donna Johnson, who owns the family business with her husband, Andy Johnson, said they have served fried shrimp for 60 years.

Johnson said their shrimp was different than others because they use a high-quality, white shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico. It’s very tender, she said, and they bread them all fresh.
