Former Gardening Center Grows into New Restaurant

Happy Dogs is a new fast food destination in Des Plaines.

After many months in the works, , opened last week at the corner of Lee Street and Oakwood Avenue. The fast-food joint is a new venture by the owners of the adjoining J & J Tire Repair. Happy Dogs serves the standard Chicago hot dog stand menu, pizza, sno-cones and, to note, fresh-cut, red potato fries.

At one time the building was home to The Farm and Garden Store, a destination for area gardeners seeking supplies from birdseed to fertilizer to feeders to overalls.

Before farm supply, the building was home to the Des Plaines Dairy, also known as Suburban Dairy, run by Arthur W. Collignon. The dairy supplied milk, cream and butter to the area.

It's not clear when the dairy opened, sometime before 1921. It moved to a larger and modern plant at 1307 Oakwood in 1935. It wasn't the only dairy in town or even on the block.

The Oakwood Dairy, run by the Jarnecke family, was at the corner of Oakwood and Center. Suburban Dairy was less successful, and is more remembered as a candy store.
