Best of Readers' Choice Winner for Mexican Food

More than 200 votes were cast in poll for best Mexican food in Des Plaines.

This week we asked readers what their favorite restaurants for Mexican food were. With 60 percent of the votes, , took the title.

Reader Audrey O’Callaghan commented, “Cancun City is the best! We come from Chicago to eat there. Miss the convenience of the Harlem Ave. location :(.”

Juventenia Salgado owns Cancun City Restaurant with her brother and sister. They first opened in 2002, and moved to Des Plaines in 2008 to expand the restaurant.

About five years ago, Chicago Magazine wrote Cancun City Restaurant had “simply the best tortilla soup,” Salgado said.

She said other customer favorites are the Cancuns Mar and Fuego, Carne Asada and Camarones a la Diabla.

Cancuns Mar and Fuego consists of crab legs, lobster, shrimp, catfish and clams, sauteed with onion and bell pepper in olive oil and simmered in a fiery red sauce, all served on a bed of Mexican rice.

Carne Asada is steak, rice and beans, and Camarones a la Diabla is steamed, spicy shrimp.

Every Saturday Gladys’s Comedy Room presents stand-up comedy at Cancun City Restaurant.

Honorable mentions include Taco Village, 1590 Rand Road, which was the runner-up with 16 percent of the votes, and Mexico Restaurant, 694 Lee St., which drew a group of supporters on Patch’s Facebook page.

One reader, Dug, added, “Las Asadas not the best looking place but the food is definitely the best.”
