Planning to Travel this Holiday Season; PCI Offers Tips to Avoid Insurance Claims

If you’re one of the millions who will be hitting the roads over the next few days for the holiday season, the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) encourages you to buckle up, avoid distractions and be prepared for emergency situations such as roadside breakdowns and traffic accidents.

According to AAA more than 85 million motorists will be on the roads between December 21st and January 1st. So, if you’re starting to pack-up and getting ready to head out the door, be sure you have an emergency travel kit that includes blankets, jumper cables, flashlight, shovel, salt, flares and other emergency supplies in your trunk. Other items that are useful include a tool kit, bottled water and high-calorie snack foods or canned fruit.

With so many drivers on the road, the chances of having an accident increase. However, if you are unfortunate enough to be in a crash or get a ticket, drivers should be aware that Illinois and 28 other states now allow drivers to show evidence of insurance with their smart phone. No more fumbling through your glove box or wallet looking for your insurance card, it has never been easier to show proof of insurance. With these new laws, drivers have a choice to use the little piece of paper or use a cell phone to demonstrate proof of coverage. The digital age dominates many everyday activities of consumers and insurers have embraced new technologies to meet the new and growing consumer demand and the e-insurance card is one example that can make life simpler.

In addition to doing an insurance check and storing your emergency kit, it is also a good idea to winterize your vehicle, make sure it’s ready for a long trip. At this time of year, there is always the possibility of freezing rain or snow, you’ll want to be prepared ahead of time. Check to make sure you have antifreeze, make sure the battery in your car is properly charged, that your tires are in good shape, and that you have enough windshield wiper fluid. It’s also a good idea to make sure your headlights, taillights and emergency flashers are working properly as well.

1.) Make sure you update your proof of insurance. Before hitting the road, replace any expired identification cards in the event you need to prove you have insurance during a traffic stop.

2.) Plan ahead and allow extra travel time. With more people on the roads, often driving in unfamiliar territory, the potential for a traffic crash increases. We encourage motorists to plan their routes in advance when traveling to new destinations, be patient, and allow for extra travel time.

3.) Observe speed limits, including lower speeds in work zones.

4.) Avoid distracted driving. When the entire family is traveling in the car, the opportunity for distraction is multiplied. Remember to put the phone down, and never text while driving.

5.) Have a plan for roadside assistance. If an accident occurs, be wary of unscrupulous towing companies. Have the phone number for your insurer or a roadside assistance program ready so you know who to call.
