Somewhere Over The Rainbow...

...three Dorothys. three Wicked Witches, one Cowardly Lion and one Good Witch Landed.

Close your eyes and tap your heels together three times. And think to yourself, there's no place like Friday night at the movies.”

The Des Plaines Optimist Club hosted their final Free Friday Night Movie in the Park on Aug. 5 with a showing of the classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz, based on the stories by L. Frank Baum. Hundreds of Ozians turned out to follow Dorothy and her friends on their magical quest.

Children were invited to dress up in character for a judged costume contest before the screening. Eight children participated, ages three to ten: three Dorothys, three wicked Witches, one lion, and one tiny Glinda the Good Witch. First prize, a $25 Target gift card, was awarded to Mary Jane Sullivan, 10, dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West, second prize, a $15 Target gift card, went to the Cowardly Lion, Jasmin Torres, 8, and third prize, a $10 Target gift card, to McKayla Garnett, 4, clad as Dorothy, complete with ruby slippers. All of the costumed participants also received a free pass to Mountain View Adventure Mine and one to Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center, courtesy of the Des Plaines Park District.

On Aug. 10, The Optimists will sponsor their Annual Free Youth Golf Tournament at the Lake Park Golf Course, for players ages nine to sixteen. The shotgun start is at 10 a.m. Golfers receive a round on the 18-hole, par three course, lunch, and prizes. All golfers should have some course play experience.
