Lake Effect Snow Warning Issued for Lake, Cook Counties

A lake effect snow warning has been issued for Lake and Cook counties with as much as 10 inches of snow predicted for isolated areas near Lake Michigan, according to the National Weather Service.

For other isolated areas, especially in the far western portions of Lake and Cook counties, as little as one to two inches of snow could fall before the warningends at 3 p.m. on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Lake effect snow squalls, which is a heavy snow shower accompanied by sudden strong winds, are expected across portions of the warning area Wednesday night.

The snow squalls could cause snowfall rates in excess of two inches per hour near areas near the lake, which could result in near zero visibility and make travel dangers, according to the NWS.

Wind gusts could be between 15 and 25 mph causing blowing and drifting snow in the warning area, according to the National Weather Service.

Travel is discouraged and those who must travel are encouraged to keep an extra flashlight, food and water with them in case of an emergency.
