Get Out: We Found Lions, Tigers, Pigs And Beethoven (And So Much More)

There is no shortage of concerts, movies in the park or summer festivals this weekend.

Movies In The Park: The Wizard Of Oz
When/Where:  Friday, August 5 at 7 p.m. at , 2200 Lee St., Des Plaines.
Why Go: Duh...it’s The Wizard Of Oz, the most awesome, amazing movie ever. How often do you have the chance to see “Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my!” on the big screen? This is a classic that the whole family can enjoy. Just beware of those Flying Monkeys and watch out for the Wicked Witch of The East and her creepy striped socks. Did we mention that there are prizes for kids in the best Wizard of Oz themed costumes?

Community Pig Roast and Concert
When/Where:  Saturday, August 6, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at , 55 W. Golf Road, Des Plaines
Why Go: If you’re a meat eater this is the place to be! This 10th annual event features live music from blues band , free raffle drawings, kids games, a pie-eating contest and a free chance to  your motorcycle in an awesome contest for trophies. All are welcome. 
Price: Free


When/Where: Thursday, August 4 at 1 p.m. 2200 W. Euclid Ave., Arlington Heights
Why Go: Senior Day features free Grandstand Seating and reduced general admission for all guests, food specials and free parking. A day at the races is exciting and affordable! Now let’s put on our best hats and bet on some ponies!
Price: $6 general admission/ $4 general admission for guests 55 and older.

Concert In The Park: Big Band Hits With Brian Patti
When/Where:  Friday, August 5 at Hodges Park, Prospect and Courtland Streets in Park Ridge, one block west of the Pickwick Theatre.
Why Go: Enjoy the last outdoor concert in the park with jazz music celebrating Artie Shaw.
Pricing: Free

Seussical, The Musical
When/Where: Fridays and Saturdays from July 22 to August 7 at 8 p.m. at the Prairie Lakes Community Center; 515 E Thacker St, Des Plaines.
Why Go: The kids will love seeing a play that features Horton, Gertrude McFuzz and many of the other Dr. Seuss characters.
Pricing: $14 adults; $11 children, students, and seniors

Northwest Highway
When/Where: Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sundays at 2:30 p.m. through September 11 at the Gift Theatre; 4802 N. Milwaukee, Chicago.
Why Go: Come see the original play about living on the Northwest Side of Chicago--and facing the road ahead. It was written by William Nedved, who grew up in this area and now works in Hollywood. 
Pricing: $20-$30

Concert In The Park
When/Where: Friday, August 5: 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Oak Park in Niles.
Why Go: Enjoy music by The White Saddle Band as well as  and a balloon artist.
Pricing: Free


When/Where: Wednesday, Aug. 3 through Sunday, Aug. 7;
Why Go: Festival-goers can enjoy live music, carnival rides, kids’ games and plenty of food from local businesses. There will be also be pony rides, a magician, bocce ball, a raffle and grand announced on Sunday. If you visit the festival on Saturday, stop by the kids' games area between 2-9 p.m. and say hello to Northbrook Patch! We'll be there handing out balloons and pens and hope to see as many new faces as possible.
Pricing: Proceeds from raffle tickets ($20 and up) benefit the Northbrook Civic Foundation, an all-volunteer organization that supports the library, local schools, scholarships, parks and several community groups in the area.


When/Where: Friday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 6; North Shore Country Club, Glenview
Why Go: Watch top amateur golfers from around the nation and nine countries compete for the 2011 title.

When/Where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5;
Why Go: Enjoy works by Beethoven, de Sarasate and Bach, performed by violinist Consuelo LePauw and pianist George LePauw.

When/Where: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, and Sunday, Aug. 7; The Glen, 1800 Patriot Blvd, Glenview
Why Go: Check out ceramics, fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, paintings, drawing and photography at this prestigious art show. Kids can get in on the action with an art scavenger hunt.

Starlight Theatre Presents: Blue Grass Night
When/Where: Friday Aug. 5, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the Wallace Bowl in Gillson Park
Why Go: Want to hear some Blue Grass with an attitude for free? Better yet, want to hear the jams underneath the summer stars? Then check out Special Consensus’ performance as part of Wilmette Park District and Startlight Theatre’s summer series of outdoor entertainment.

Chi-Town Clown Revue for Kids
When/Where: Aug. 6 at 10 a.m. at the Wilmette Theatre, 
Why Go: Check out some top-notch Chicago clown performers and get a free bag of popcorn if you download and color this flyer

Spilled Ink: A Creative Writing Workshop for grades 3-5  
When/Where: Saturday Aug. 6, 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Morton Grove Public Library, 6140 Lincoln Ave.
Why Go: Kids are invited to experiment in using theater games and activities to inspire your writing. Learn how to move like a monster, feel like a lizard, and dream like a giant and then write all about it in a fabulous story you can share.

LegoLand Discovery Center Presents: Legopalooza      
When/Where: Saturday Aug. 6., ages 4-7 from 2-3 p.m. and ages 7-12 from 3-4 p.m. at the Morton Grove Public Library, 6140 Lincoln Ave.
Why Go: Who can pass up a Lego extravaganza? Legoland’s Master Builders will be on hand for workshops in building small models, a tall tower and a throne and bridge. Or strike out on your own and build from your own imagination.

When/Where: The Skokie Police Explorers, a division of the Boy Scouts of America, will host their annual car wash fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 6, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the retired Skokie Police Department parking lot, 8350 Laramie Avenue, at the corner of Main Street.
Why Go: Get those old french fries out from in between your seats, and support a community organization at the same time.
Pricing: $5 for regular size vehicles.

Piano Pieces from the Americas

When/Where: Rosa Julstrom, retired pianist and teacher, will present a program to members of the Ethical Humanist Society, 7574 Lincoln Avenue in Skokie, and the general public Sunday, Aug. 7, 10:30 a.m. to noon.                                                                                   Why Go: She will include pieces by lesser-known African American and Latin American composers, and provide some commentary on each. Joining her will be her son, Steve Julstrom, playing his father’s violin solos.                                                                                           Price: Free
