Empire Carpet Man, Evanston Resident, Dead at 89

The man was the face and voice of Empire Carpet commercials.

Lynn Hauldren, an Evanston resident best known for his decades-long role as the Empire Carpet man, has died at the age of 89.

Hauldren landed the role while working in advertising for Empire. The company had held auditions for the role but they were unsuccessful, and Hauldren ended up filling in for the character. He is also credited with writing the company's famous jingle.

In later years, Hauldren disappeared from the ad spots, though his voice remained. He was replaced by an animated cartoon version of himself.
