Evanston Congresswoman calls Dold’s recent proposal on women’s health a political ploy. He accuses her of partisanship.
Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) accused Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) Tuesday of introducing legislation merely to cast himself as a political moderate, while Dold replied Schakowsky is unwilling to act in a bipartisan fashion. Schakowsky made her remarks during a telephone news conference Tuesday with Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider, Dold’s Democratic opponent in the Nov. 6 general election, to explain why Dold’s record on women’s issues is unsatisfactory. Earlier: Dold Proposal Would Help Women’s Health Schakowsky was particularly critical of a bill Dold introduced last week prohibiting discrimination against health care providers participating in certain government programs from excluding services like contraception …

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich indicated he would be suspending his campaign this week after former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won another five states in the primary contest on Tuesday. Gingrich continued to give speeches in North Carolina this week as a “citizen,” NBC reported. "The campaign will go bye-bye, but I'll be a citizen," Gingrich said. "I've been an active citizen since I was 15." Gingrich confirmed he would suspend his campaign at a news conference in the “middle of next week,” The Fayetteville Observer reported on Friday. The Republican presidential hopeful suspended his campaign this week.
The hotly contested nomination to become the GOP’s presidential candidate tamped down to a smolder this week, as Sen. Rick Santorum, of Pennsylvania, suspended his campaign at the Gettysburg Hotel on Tuesday. Illinois played a more significant role in this year’s presidential primary as it dragged on longer than some past contests. A month ago the former senator and congressman addressed a packed auditorium at Hersey High School, before losing the state to former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Romney picked up 41 delegates in the Land of Lincoln, compared with Santorum’s 10. Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich did not gain any delegates in the primary vote. We thought it would be appropriate to take a look back at that time, and Santorum’s …

The 20-year veteran statesman does not support Sweeney, of Park Ridge.
Susan Sweeney, a Republican write-in candidate from Park Ridge, garnered more than enough votes to appear on November’s ballot to represent the newly-drawn 55th District, but Rosemary Mulligan, a Republican from Des Plaines who announced she would not seek another term in January, does not support her candidacy. Further, Mulligan said the Illinois House Republican Organization was responsible for submitting the petition signatures that were successfully challenged by a Des Plaines resident, knocking her name off the primary ballot. Mulligan said she handed over her petition signatures to the Illinois House Republican Organization to complete because she had several personal setbacks at the time, including the death of a close friend. “So I…

Sweeney needed at least 500 to get on the ballot. Sweeney said when they knew about 2,500 write-in votes were cast, she was hopeful they would get a large portion of those. “I was thrilled to see that we a huge portion,” Sweeney said. “To gather over 2,300 votes in less than two months as a write-in campaign speaks volumes to the support and what I have to offer the people in this district.” Earlier: Sweeney says voters, government officials need to “step up.” Sweeney said she just needed to plan from here. “I’m …

With scant support for bipartisan proposal, Dold votes for Ryan Republican budget. Schneider claims bill hurts seniors and middle class. Schakowsky also weighs in.
After joining a failed bipartisan effort to adopt a broad approach to rein in the country’s financial condition Wednesday, Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) of Illinois 10th Congressional District voted for the Republican House budget proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) Thursday. Dold’s decision to go along with the House Republican majority after the initial idea did not get much support from either party drew criticism from Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider, Dold’s Democratic opponent in the Nov. 6 general election. Dold joined a group of Democrats and Republicans to introduce a proposed budget for the next fiscal year based on recommendations two years ago by President Barack Obama’s deficit reduction commission, known as the …

Anticipation builds for the Republican candidate and community activist from Park Ridge as she awaits the final count.
Susan Sweeney, a Republican from Park Ridge who ran as a write-in candidate to represent Illinois’ 55th House District in the primary on March 20, is waiting for ballots to be counted, the Daily Herald reported. She needs 500 votes in order for her name to appear on the ballot in November, and if she does not succeed, Republican leaders can appoint a candidate to face Mayor Marty Moylan, a Democrat from Des Plaines, in the general election. Sweeney will have to wait at lease a few more days to find out if her efforts yielded 500 write-in votes. Kevin Artl, political director of the Illinois House Republican Organization, said they expected the ballots to be counted on Friday, but was not sure when the results would be available. Earlier: …

Primary opponents offer support at unity rally.
Brad Schneider stood with Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) and his three opponents for the Democratic nomination for the 10th Congressional District seat Thursday in Lincolnshire in a show of unity after winning Tuesday’s primary. Schakowsky and Schneider rallied more than 250 people at a Tenth Congressional District Democrats unity event to put aside their differences after a spirited primary and focus their energy on unseating Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) as Ilya Sheyman, John Tree and Vivek Bavda pledged their support. Schneider began his general election campaign Wednesday morning at the Highland Park train station and Dold wasted little time responding to the Deerfield management consultant’s criticism. Earlier: Update: Dold …
