We ask readers what businesses and other organizations would be good fits for empty commercial and retail spaces.
A few weeks ago we asked readers what type of business they would like to see move into the empty retail space at 1473 Ellinwood Ave., which is next to the Des Plaines library. As of May 1, 103 readers voted in the poll between a café, coffee shop, copy/shipping store and juice bar. The winner, with 61 votes, 59 percent of the total, was a coffee shop. Quiznos was the first occupant at 1473 Ellinwood Ave., the retail space adjacent to the library, after Library Plaza opened in 2000. The space, which is next to the parking garage entrance on the north side, was subsequently occupied by the Brasserie Restaurant. The Brasserie served Indian and Italian food, according to online reviews, until it closed. The space has been vacant for years. A week ago we asked readers what type of business they would like to see move into the empty retail space at 1479 Market St. in Des Plaines. As of Feb. 20, 86 readers voted in the poll between a bookstore, boutique, coffee shop, delicatessen, and bar and grill. The winner, with 47 votes, 54 percent of the total, was a bar and grill. Coldstone Creamery occupied the 1,458 square-foot space at 1479 Market St. from August 2006 to March 2008, according to city records. Since that time it, like many other spaces in Metropolitan Square, has remained vacant. Samantha Sharp, manager at World Gym, a couple doors away at 1453 Market St., said some kind of bar and restaurant might be a good match. Cheeseburger in Paradise closed last year, and there are not many options like that in the downtown area, Sharp said.
