Over fifty boating enthusiasts, of all ages, turned out for the 13th annual Sail a Sailboat Day at Lake Opeka on June 23. Experienced skippers from the Des Plaines Park District’s Yacht Club piloted passengers on a free tour around the lake from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Voyagers were treated to a view of the 18-hole, par-3, golf course, weekend picnickers enjoying the open space and sand volleyball courts, and the Lake Park Memorial pavilion, home of the Live at the Lake Series,
The Des Plaines Park District Yacht Club is a not-for-profit community organization that promotes the sport of sailing for landlubbers and seasoned salts alike. Regattas are held on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings during the summer. Qualified sailors teach at the Des Plaines Park District’s beginner and intermediate/advanced summer sailing camps where prospective skippers learn to sail properly and confidently, with plenty of camp time spent on the water. Ownership of a boat is not required to participate.
For those who hear the siren’s song, Rebel sailboats and paddleboats are available to rent at the clubhouse, 1015 Howard Street, during the season. The clubhouse also has a golf pro shop that carries balls, gloves, and clubs, and carts to rent. Through October 30, the sporty Lake Park golf course has tee times available from 7:00am to dusk, and is perfect for a foursome or a company outing. The Des Plaines Park District participates in the Sticks for Kids program, which supplies free golf clubs for children to use for lessons or a round of golf.
