Woman Pleads Guilty, Sentenced For Stealing From Employer

Tammy Weart is sentenced to 11.5 years for stealing more than $1 million.

A Des Plaines woman accused of stealing more than $1 million from her employer pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of theft and was sentenced to 11.5 years in prison.

, 53, of the 500 block of Anita Street, was charged with 30 counts of theft in December after it was discovered that she had transferred more than $1 million from Specialty Moving Systems, Inc. in Glenview, to her personal bank account between February 2003 and December of 2009. Weart worked at the company as a controller.

“For more than six years Tammy Weart took advantage of the trust placed in her by her former employer using company bank accounts as her own personal piggy bank,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said today in a news release. “Her actions caused significant hardship to not only Specialty Moving Systems but to her fellow employees as well."

In addition to her prison sentence, Weart has been ordered to pay full restitution to Specialty Moving Systems. She must complete 50 percent of her sentence before she will be eligible for parole.
