Update: Schakowsky Draws Primary Challenger

Evanston Democrat files to run against the incumbent.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Simon Ribeiro of Evanston filed nominating petitions to enter the March 20 Democratic primary against Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston).

Ribeiro's website describes him as a high school teacher in an Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic school, and a former lifeguard and swimming instructor.

According to the Chicago Tribune, he ran as the Green Party candidate in last November's election against Schakoweky and Republican Joel Pollak for the Ninth Congressional District. Schakowsky won that election.

(Earlier story filed at 6 a.m. Tuesday). Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) submitted paperwork to seek an eighth term in the United States House of Representatives while two Republicans seek an opportunity to unseat her in the Nov. 6 general election.

Schakowsky has no primary opponent at this point. All petitions must be filed by 5 p.m. today. Candidates for all other offices filed earlier this month. A federal court order held up Congressional filing because of a challenge to the new map.

Seeking the Republican nomination for the seat are Arlington Heights accountant Timothy Wolfe and Susanne Atanus of Des Plaines.

The new 9th district now includes all of Winnetka, Kenilworth and Wilmette. More of Glenview and less of Morton Grove is part of the new boundaries as well as portions of Northbrook and Northfield. Schakowsky said she looks forward to meeting her new constituents.

“I'm glad to be officially filed to run for re-election and look forward to meeting with and learning from the residents and leaders in the areas new to the 9th district,” Schakowsky said.

Too bad it can't be easy or simple, Simon. Good Luck on beating this witless entity to win the nomination. FINALLY a Democrat who is actively opposing corruption instead of defending it and basking and partying with its KNOWN practicioners.

Free the working people from the chains and Schako-les of vote slavery. BAN JAN !

How interesting and historic it would be to have a person with Catholic values represent this district which has never had any in the history of local politics; it would break the stranglehold of those who use "religion" to corral votes.

Imagine, too...having a local congressman who PAID his taxes, and didn't hide behind a tissue of deception and fake excuses or whose spouse isn't an ex-con.

Go, Simon!
