The big winner for the best place to grocery shop in Des Plaines is — drumroll — Shop ‘n Save Market!
Rory Handcock, general manager at Shop ‘n Save Market, said the family-owned store is one of five in the Chicago area, and they do a number of things large chain stores do not.
“We’re able to react to what customers need a lot faster than the chains are, and we will go ahead and search for an item that someone wants, whereas the chains are all planograms and so on,” Handcock said.

One of the store’s signature items is the bakery’s rye bread, made from scratch, and baked in batches throughout the day, he said. It’s all natural and not processed.
“Our rye bread tastes so much different than others,” Handcock said. “It’s the way we bake it, eight to 10 times a day. You can get it hot.”
Handcock said the store caters to many ethnic food varieties not found at other stores including Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Slovakian and Middle Eastern. He said they try to make customers feel welcome by offering these items, and by having employees in the aisles to help locate items.
“It’s our customer service that we try to provide that other stores might not,” Handcock said. “We try and make people feel at home when they come shop by us.”
