Rivers Casino Workers Vote ‘No’ to Union

A group of parking and valet personnel voted against joining Teamsters Local 727 based in Park Ridge.

Parking and valet workers at Rivers Casino, 3000 S. River Road, voted against joining Teamsters Local 727 in Park Ridge on Oct. 26, said Maggie Jenkins, spokesperson for the union.

Des Plaines Mayor Marty Moylan sent a letter of support to the workers on Oct. 9, which stated the workers would have an opportunity to vote to join Teamsters Local 727 on Oct. 26.

Moylan, who has represented the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 134 for many years, stated he knew firsthand how unions could make a difference to workers.

“A union contract provides job security and gives you a voice in your workplace,” Moylan stated. “Wages of union members are on average 27% higher than those without union representation, and perhaps, most importantly, as union members, you and your coworkers can rest assured that someone always has your back.”

Jenkins said she could not comment on whether the casino workers were still considering joining a union.

“I can tell you that the election did take place and the workers decided not to join the union at this time,” Jenkins said.

In response to an inquiry about the unionization of workers spokesperson for Rivers Casino, Jodie Shpritz Kaplan, of Culloton Strategies, stated in an email to Patch, “We have no comment at this time.”

Should public officials under public letterhead really be endorsing one side over the other?

These guys make it on cash tips. A possible 27% increase in base pay is not much,
it might not even cover the union dues.
