Michael “Mick” Cicirello, 65, of Wauconda, has seen Des Plaines change quite a bit over the years. Cicirello grew up in Des Plaines, and has operated Mike’s Barber Shop, 1397 E. Prairie Ave., since 1974.

Cicirello is a third-generation barber. He started working at this father’s shop, which used to be located a couple blocks from his current location off Lee Street.

“It’s not as good as it used to be,” Cicirello said. “There’s too many of those Super-Cuts, Great Clips — the chain shops.”

Cicirello said in the 1960’s there were nine barbershops within four blocks in downtown Des Plaines.

“We all made a living,” Cicirello said. “Not anymore. I’m the only barbershop uptown now.”

In between cuts, Cicirello shared some of his favorite things about the community.

Patch: Where is one of your favorite places to go in Des Plaines?

Don’s Dock, I stop there three times a week. I like the fried shrimp, salmon and smoked salmon. He’s got the best seafood in town.

Patch: What is one of your favorite things to do in Des Plaines?

I used to play softball at Rand Park all through the 70’s and part of the 80’s.

I had a great time. It was a great group of guys, great commeraderie, and we were competitive too. I don’t think I could throw a ball down the alley now.

Patch: What is one thing you know about Des Plaines that others may not?

It’s changed. A lot of people don’t know that. A lot of new people have moved in in the last 15-20 years.

This was a helluva town 30-40 years ago. You could get anything here. You didn’t have to leave town for anything. Everything was downtown — restaurants, stores, all different types of shops. Anything you needed you came right here uptown and got it.
