Patch Flash: Driver’s Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants Passes IL Senate

Chicagoland news to talk about: Illinois legislators among best paid in the country.

The Illinois state Senate voted on Tuesday to allow undocumented immigrants to obtain temporary drivers licenses, and sent to the House the measure that would make Illinois the most populous U.S. state to allow such licenses.

Only Washington state and New Mexico allow drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants, while Utah allows driving permits. Republican leaders in the Illinois state legislature earlier on Tuesday announced their support for the proposal, after Hispanics voted overwhelmingly for Democrats in the November election.

Illinois has some 2 million Hispanics, according to the 2010 Census, and lawmakers said there are an estimated 250,000 undocumented immigrants in the state.

Illinois’ legislators are among the highest paid lawmakers in the country, and their benefits include retiree healthcare and pensions valued at more than $1 million for the longest-serving incumbents, according to the Better Government Association examination of lawmakers’ annual payouts.

Their annual salary is $67,836, but about three-fourths of General Assembly members also get additional cash compensation for leadership positions ranging from $10,327 for chairing a committee to $27,476 for a top General Assembly job.

In the current fiscal year, these leadership stipends boosted average pay to $77,382, according to data obtained by the BGA under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act from the Illinois Comptroller. In contrast, Illinois workers make an average $46,550, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Teachers in District 300 will head to the picket lines instead of their classrooms as LEAD 300 union officials hope it will be a short strike.

“I feel we are pretty close,” said Mike Williamson, LEAD spokesman. “I’m not sure they feel the same way. We’d like them to come and meet with us and quickly resolve this. Hopefully we won’t be out long.” Picket lines will be set up at the district’s high schools, including Jacobs High School in Algonquin and the district’s administrative offices in Carpentersville, he said.

After spending close to $270,000 of his savings on a nursing home and around-the-clock care for his wife, John McCann was horrified to learn that doctors discovered 57 maggots had hatched in her ear. Catherine McCann, a 92-year-old who has Alzheimer's disease and is unable to speak, was living at the Lutheran Home for the Aged in the suburb of Arlington Heights, Ill., at the time of the incident, CBS Chicago reports. Now the family is suing the nursing home for emotional distress and negligence. The infestation was documented by doctors at Northwest Community Hospital, who made a videotape of the scene before beginning extraction. The tape was so graphic, however, CBS declined to air it.

A Winnetka resident and veterinarian told police he spotted a mountain lion just south of Lake Cook Road in Glencoe on Sunday, Nov. 25.

That’s the same day a Highland Park resident reported a possible cougar sighting.  “I can definitely recognize a mountain lion,” veterinarian Bryan Haag, DVM, told Glencoe News Monday. “I’ve seen them before.”

Chicago Botanic Garden security investigated the incident but only found coyotes, Glencoe News reported. Similarly, Highland Park police did not find any tracks or other evidence confirming the identification of the animal when they investigated the possible cougar sighting.

Former Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka is visiting Binny's Beverage Depot in Niles Weds., Dec. 12 to promote his wines.

Ditka will greet football fans, as well as wine fans, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the store, 8935 N. Milwaukee Ave., Niles. Ditka has paired with Terlato Wines International of Lake Bluff to create wines which reference different phases of his career, from player to Hall of Famer, according to Huffington Post. There are eight wines in the line, including chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet saugivnon and pinot noir.

I'm a conservative. I only now donate to the individual and no longer to the "republican" party or GOP. Illinois has sunk deeper and deeper into debt and keeps raising taxes higher and higher. If I could leave this state I would. Right now I'm stuck for just a few more years. I'll keep praying in the meantime, for better leaders, more jobs (not government ones) to open for thousands and lower taxes for everyone.

The day of reckoning will come when Illinois' unsustainable level of government hand-outs, taxing, spending, deficits and corruption bankrupts the state. As depressing as corrupt Democratic machine politicians are, it's more depressing that the worthless lemmings who vote in Illinois put the same scum back in power year after year regardless of the job they do.

We are now officially a country dominated by low information voters who vote only on the basis of who is going to be a bigger Santa Claus to them.

No longer are we the country of "ask not what your country can do for you, but what can you do for your country".

I am now to the point where i'm almost ashamed to be an American.. and feel so bad about how much sacrifice 'the greatest generation' of Americans made in WWII, just to see us botch the whole damned thing.

Dan, we can see by the way the latest 'fiscal cliff' talks are going, who the adults are and who the children are.

The sad thing is that even most children learn by a tender age that money doesn't grow on trees and that there are limits to how much mom and dad can spend.

Our president wants to put off the spending issues of balancing a budget until AFTER raising the debt ceiling.. AGAIN.

Our president acts like a child when it comes to money.

Do you know that they have 54 fully decorated trees in the White House this year?? it's more than twice as many as last year. They don't look cheap.

Yet, the first family is going to Hawaii for Christmas..for three weeks. That, right there, gives you some clues as to how little he cares about fiscal soundness... he isn't concerned about setting good examples, that's for damned sure.

They can get insurance from many different companies. I have spoken with some of the companies who insure them, they pay a premium and are some of the most cautious drivers on the road. They can get arrested for not having a license and most do go to court, but they pay a fine, have a DL number generated and their "license" will get suspended.

They don't get deported for many offenses, especially traffic, but may be documented by ICE before release.

To be clear, I'm not against LEGAL immigration at all.

I can hardly think of anyone who's family didn't immigrate here at some point in the past. Anyone who immigrates legally should be allowed to work and pay into the social services programs - but until they've done so for seven years, they ought not to be able to obtain any of those benefits - this would help to weed out those looking to game the system to the detriment of the rest of us.

But that said, I'm 100% against giving ANYTHING to anyone who's come here illegally because we ought not to give anything to criminals.

No welfare, no handouts, no social services, no health care, and no driver's licenses. No "Dream Act" handouts to children of illegal immigrants (who should also be deemed illegal as well). It should be 100% clear that if you come here illegally, you get absolutely nothing. No one will hire you because the fine should be $100,000 per illegal employee per day to the employer.

All the illegal immigrant should get is sent back to whatever Country they originated from. If they come back a 2nd time, they should get sent to Prison and we ought to demand reimbursement of the imprisonment costs from their homeland's government - or the ability to transfer that person to the homeland where they'd be imprisoned there, at the homeland's expense.

SB 957 allows the Secretary of State to issue temporary visitor's driver's licenses to applicants who have resided in this State for more than a year, are ineligible to obtain a social security number, and who are unable to present documentation issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services authorizing the person's presence in this country.

The bill says an adult "unable to present US citizenship papers" may identify themselves to the driver's license facility staff with a valid, unexpired passport or a valid, unexpired consular ID from the applicant's country of citizenship.
Although applicants will need to take driver's tests at the DMV offices, the legislation does not require them to attend driver's training classes. If those issued temporary licenses are found to be driving without state-required car insurance, their license privileges will be suspended immediately. In order for the Secretary of State's office to prepare the needed forms, tests and personnel for these proposed changes, the legislation will take effect 10 months after it becomes law.

The Senate vote on SB 957 was as follows. Democrat senator Bill Haine and Ed Maloney opposed the bill, along with 12 Republicans - Bivins, Bomke, Cultra, Duffy, Christine Johnson, John O. Jones, La Hood, Lauzen, Luechtefeld, McCann, McCarter and Syverson.
Senator Gary Forby voted "present," and Senators Althoff, Hutchinson and Righter were not on the floor.

What is this crap? How dare the legislators do this. Illegals are criminals just by the fact they are here. Add to that the murders, rapes, drunk driving, accidents, and a host of other wrongs and it is insane to give them anything other than a good swift kick in the ass and across the border. Are they going to buy car insurance, are they going to actually buy license plates, are they really living where they say they are, are they actually trustworthy to ride a bicycle? This is wrong and it needs to be on a ballot for the WHOLE state to vote on, not just Chicago, Cook county or other densely populated latino community

Illegal immigration was one of the causes of the D300 teacher strike.

The teacher's union complained about classroom size (..and then money) as classroom sizes have grown to 35+ in a classroom.

We had a tax referendum less than ten years ago to build more schools and then another one to pay for those teachers. What's happened since then that we did not PLAN for? Why is that? Is it because the citizens in the area went on a baby making boom 10-15 years ago?

The answer is so obvious that none of the parties involved (teacher's union or administration) talked about it. Maybe they have among themselves, in whispers, but they certainly won't say it in public.

Illegal immigration has cost us quality of life and our kids a quality education, as teachers are forced to teach down to these students with little command of the national language.

Lose - lose... for taxpaying citizens.

Ashley, it's common sense.

The tax referendum(s) less than ten years ago were supposed to take care of the growth issues (once again, illegals) in the district. Those planners did not and could not fully plan for future illegal immigrants and anchor babies.

All you need to do is ask yourself where all these extra kids came from that D300 did not plan for? Classroom sizes are up to 35+ even after the new schools were built.

Where did these kids come from Ashley? Is it because the citizens from around this area are in some kind of baby making boom? I don't think so.

Why is it a great idea to spend millions of dollars on trying to deport every single illegal immigrant in this country? That would fall into the same category as the war on drugs. One step forward and two steps back...always costing more and more and using up our manpower of law enforcement. If we grant some forms of amnesty and work to legalize those that are here, how would that hurt the situation more than what we have now? We would get more people contributing to the economy.

Tie that in with greater border restrictions, not just in Mexico but all over. We can work at the same time to stop the human trafficking and illegal sex trade issues we have as well. With both those intact (amnesty and tighter borders) we may be able to also focus more on catching criminals instead of chasing down people working here illegally just to pay to send them home.

Then you were saying how could he get sued if it was self defense? and I explained that back then that's whats happened. The guy that broke in was a convicted rapist, and had a felon for burglary. The state dropped the charges and the judge through out the wrongful suit from the family my point was that he got sued for saving his life, his wife's life and my nieces life in his own home and you guys were like thats impossible! The guy was also carrying a .45 and reaching for it when he walked into the room but I guess he's still wrong then for saving 3 lives? IF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT LEGALIZED MARIJIANA, THERE WOULD BE NO DEFICIT... THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT COULD EASILY EMPLOY MEXICANS IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY TO GROW MARIJUANA AND SELL IT TO THE U.S. FOR "LEGAL" DISTRIBUTION... THE U.S. COULD THEN PACKAGE AND TAX MARIJUANA, JUST AS IT DOES FOR CIGARETTES AND ALCOHOL; TAKING THE CRIMINAL ELEMENT OUT OF IT... HOWEVER, THAT MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE FOR THEM, BUT HAVING THEIR OWN INSIDE GUYS SELLING MATERIALS TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT VIA "GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS" IS OKAY TO CHARGE $600.00 FOR A HAMMER AND $400.00 FOR A TOILET SEAT... Again, we have all these monetary issues as a country...wouldn't legalizing these undocumented folks be the most cost effective option from a tax gains standpoint as well as straight dollar amount solutions? The percentage of those that are Hispanic is roughly 80% - The Pew Institute

Statics show that Latinos from Cuba, and South America tend to vote conservative/ Republican. -State voting records

In 2000, George W. Bush carried the Hispanic vote by 50% to 48%. -The Pew Institute

Illinois has been a Blue State since 1988 and the number of voters registering Democrat increases every year. - State of Illinois Voter Information

In order to register to vote in Illinois, you must have proof a citizenship. A driver's license is NOT proof of citizenship. -State of Illinois

Between the year 2000-2010: 649 million votes cast in general elections and there were 13 credible cases of in-person voter impersonation - ProPublica

You further go on to insinuate that EVERY single undocumented person that gets a drivers license will then go vote illegally, risking their freedom and deportation just so a Democrat can win.

Brian the Democrat Party has won and will continue to win elections without those phantom "illegal voters". Illinois has been a blue state for twenty years and the law allowing the undocumented drivers licenses hasn't even gone into effect. Ask yourself why government officials are not at this very moment rounding up and deporting those here illegally. It wouldn't be that difficult to do but they are not doing it. Why? Because the impact to the economy would be severe that it could backfire on the party responsible. Just ask the states of Arizona, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. Do you know the financial impact deporting immigrants will have on this country? Do the research.

It is the responsibility of both State and Federal officials to secure our borders and they have not. This is not all Obama's fault. Reagan, Clinton, both Bush's and every other President and elected official previous has had every opportunity to secure our borders and have done nothing during their terms. I want some type of impenetrable wall or fence built and hundreds more border patrol agents hired. Heck, use our military if they have to, but secure our borders. Let's point the finger at who is responsible for leaving our doors and windows open. Once we secure our borders, we won't have to be wasting our time talking about "illegals" because there won't be any.
As a Christian, my faith, my Lord, tells me to love everyone, not just those who are here legally. He has commanded that I feed the poor, shelter the homeless, dress the naked and nurse the sick. I will not turn my back on my faith because someone doesn't have the proper papers. It is the responsibility of all who call themselves followers of Christ to love our brothers and sisters, and to provide if necessary regardless of what their immigration status is. If you cannot do that than don't you dare call yourself a Christian.

I agree about the wall! The the wall and build it tall! BUT! with our taxes we paying too: I feed the poor illegals, shelter the homeless illegals, dress the naked and nurse the sick illegals. Enough is enough.

And what Ashley claims so proudly is why Illinois is fighting with California and New York to see who can go bankrupt first. Although turning a blind eye to illegal immigrants pales in comparison to the cost of other liberal policies, it's just one more brick in the wall of liberal ideology.
Unfortunately, what we are about to witness is another civil war precipitated by economic collapse. Since conservative, primarily red states like Arizona, Texas, Carolinas, etc., control the bulk of oil delivery and refinement, the majority of manufacturing and have a per capita gun ownership and armed services participation almost nine times that of liberal states, it's not too difficult to see who will win.
While I agree with the compassionate ideology of liberalism, it still has to be paid for, and unfortunately the states that have pursued those policies are not doing well financially and very soon will not be able to count on federal funds derived from more successful states to shore up those policies.

Chris, neither liberal policies nor immigration played a role in why Illinois is in financial distress. This crisis is the result of a combination of complex factors and has been decades in the making. Don't you think that if simply kicking out all the "illegals" and changing a couple of "liberal" policies would fill our coffers with gold and silver someone would have done it by now? Unfortunately, we now live in a global market place and what happens on the other side of the world now has the potential of impacting us here at home.

dan, how proud your mother must be of you to see that you can so freely insult a woman by claiming she is "not smart" simply because you have differing opinions. I hope, if you have daughters, no man ever tells them they are stupid because they did not agree with him or because they voiced an opposing view.
Let me give you some advice, calling a woman stupid doesn't make you intelligent, it makes you, well...stupid.

LMAO. Ok Ashley, i was wrong to imply that you aren't smart, but it's got nothing to do with you being a woman, etc.. you started it up the thread, but still, i'm sorry.

Let me give you some advice. It's hard to prove ANYTHING on forums like this one, even if you cite websites, etc.. and link to sources that you believe hold the truth. Much, if not all, of what we spout off about here is 'opinion', so to ask people to back up their rants with sources is pretty much useless.

I can cite something i read on The Atlantic or Daily Kos...you can cite something from Breitbart or Fox News and neither one of us would be satisfied with the link.

Back to the topic, i agree with you about a wall and also that we cannot blame any one person for our situation on the border... every politician has pandered to the illegals in hopes of getting votes later on.

jeff

Exactly votes! They do get illegal voting cards but all we can do is VOTE in who each of us thinks will do the best job on dealing with the illegal immigration problems and then we can all bitch about it here.

Dan, you have altered my opinion of your character with your apology. Thank you. I'm not expecting cites or links. I am expecting that someone has done their research before the make a claim. I believe we have a responsibility to be an informed voter and to accept anything on face value only diminishes the greatness of this country. I will concede to any debater if my information is proven incorrect, but I have a difficult time respecting comments that are made without the ability to be substantiated. I respect others "opinions" as long as the discourse is civil and will always agree to disagree, but I have a very difficult time when someone attempts to proclaim something as fact without any evidence to bolster their claim.

Maybe no one would know if you didn't post and delete a comment where you didn't mask the word in the first place. And such a conceited fellow to think that everyone else in the world shares only your view...or do you have that from your inside sources as well? I remember our gun argument where you had inside sources for that also.....which i think one was a pro gun message board and the other was something like your friend's brother-in-law who was in law enforcement. Such the master of debate.

Jeff...why are you so angry at people on the internet? It must be tough to type through all the red you see. (*you're, it's, hearsay, it's) But that isn't the real issue here. I never said everyone agreed with me...far from it. You just assumed everyone agreed with you and no one with Ashley...I corrected. It's pretty obvious the country is split about 50/50 on all the hot button issues. Also, you do get facts from hearsay as you are citing other people's experiences...not your own. Look it up, the definition.

Also, I think this is the second time you have wanted to fight me over something said on the internet. So you ask me if it's personal when you are the one taking it personally. Why on earth would I want to meet and fight you over your opinion? You have every right to think what you do. I don't want to stop that. I just want to disagree and in doing so give my points. Problems aren't always solved on the playground. Grow up a little bit...and again....relax, take a deep breath, and get yourself a hug. It might help.

Brian just mind your own Business! Thats not hear say when your having thanks giving dinner with someone who WORKS THERE and they shoot you some percentages same ones I mentioned. Now thats fact they got the numbers themselves and you just said it your self from there LIVE experience with that job that's not hearsay that's not second hand from some website or poll that somebody took but that's from them direct. I was blown away I couldn't believe it myself. Again, you cant get more factual than that.

Brian

Hearsay: unverified, unofficial information gained or acquired from another and not part of one's direct knowledge

So do you work those jobs? You got it from another person who claims to have the "correct" numbers. It's the same thing Jeff. Anyone can tell you anything. Your source's numbers might be spot on, I don't know...but neither do you (according to the defined noun...hearsay.) You can get more factual. You can sit and do the studies and find the numbers yourself and not hear them from another channel.

You also told me in the past that the FBI website provided only false information, but one of your sources was a law enforcement official if memory serves. My thoughts would be the information comes from the same paperwork.

Again, this isn't personal by any means from this end. I'm just trying to point out that your argument has flaws too. You don't get to tell everyone they are quoting lies when yours could be wrong as well.

"stupidity and xenophobia"

Oh. So we have a story about how the state of Illinois is going to allow illegal aliens the right to drive legally, and most of the legal residents aren't happy about this so Jon Schneider attributes this to xenophobia, let alone stupidity.

Jon, are you a liberal? Don't bother answering. I know you must be. Only liberals see racism everywhere they go.

Are some people on here upset that they live in a state, in a country, that panders to illegal aliens? Of course. Most reasonable people realize that illegal immigration has compromised our quality of life and has cost each of us some of our hard earned tax money.

First off I want to say that that I am completely against illegal immigration. I am a first generation American who came here from Europe as a refugee and have obtained citizenship the proper and legal way and do consider myself an American. I see most of you right away lean to the Hispanic community when speaking of illigal immigration and just wanted to point out and see what you all think of other illegal immigrants who are not Hispanic. I know of many students who have overstayed their visas and others who have come here with work permits and overstayed those too. I don't know the numbers and I'm not going to pretend I do but I'm sure there is a significant amount of those illigal aliens as well, granted not as many as the Hispanic community but still they do exists. The reason I bring these illigal immigrants up is because they actually do hold social security numbers and can obtain drivers licenses, insurance, credit cards, etc.

Yep and that will certainly contribute to more debt! You can buy anything in this country if you want to pay for it. I think, if I remember right, that Mexicans made up about 60%....but my data could be wrong. Wikipedia confirmed it, but you know...it's wiki...so who knows. That is just Mexicans as well, not other countries from Latin America. The obvious reason being is that to get here illegally from Europe is a little bit harder. Many get here legally but overstay....but those numbers will never be as high as though who can essentially "walk" across the border.

The illegals immigrants are already in USA, they are employed in whatever they do. What is so disgusting or scary about them getting a license?.Isn't it a better option than they driving the trucks without licenses or having to walk or depend on somebody else to go anywhere?.
It is obvious that now or in the very future, a good number of the illegals will be legalized or given an option to become legal. There is no government in any civilized, developed country that will make an arbitrary decision to deport million plus just like that. It is acknowledged that what they have done is a criminal act, but then the criminal act is to come live in what is paradise for them, in spite of their struggles. These kind of summary expulsions or forced re-settlement will never happen, both our mainstream parties will not do it, there is no president who will take pride in such an action.

So the moral of the story is that if you can get a big enough group of people to break the law simultaneously, then not only will you avoid being punished for your crime, both political parties will confer upon you the status of super-citizen, and will do whatever they can to grant you favors to buy your votes.

EUREKA!!! THAT'S BEEN OUR PROBLEM!!!

All this time us conservatives have held the silly notion that if we obeyed the law, then government would leave us alone and appreciate our contribution to our community, when all we get is higher taxes while our government demonizes us as the cause of every problem in society.

I finally get it.

OK, now which law do we break en-mass?

Gary, The conservative beacon, Mr.Reagan approved an illegal amnesty during his presidency years. In 1986, he ok'd legalizing all who entered illegally before 1982. The conservatives have been all for pardoning law breakers, Nixon by Ford, North by Reagan, Libby by Bush are some examples. You do not have to feel and talk and pretend as if Conservatives represent the side of law, it is only by convenience.
You know something, compassion overrides the law, as demonstrated in all the instances listed above.
