The majority of the snowfall has made its way through the Des Plaines area. The National Weather Service reported the bulk of the accumulation would occur during the early evening hours.
Snowfall is expected through the tonight with a total accumulation of four to seven inches.
On Friday evening motorists were moving at a crawl, if at all. The sticky white stuff was collecting on vehicle windows, reducing visibility. Windshield wipers were icing up, causing some drivers to hop out of their vehicles while stuck in traffic to remove some of the ice, either by hand or slapping the wipers against the windshields.
The snowfall is expected to result in airline disruptions as well.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory this morning that remains in effect from noon to midnight tonight. The air temperatures should remain cold enough for all snow in the Northwest suburbs.
Snowfall is expected to begin mid-morning and become heaviest from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Accumulation should reach between two and three inches, and larger amounts of snow are forecasted farther north from Altona to Lacon to Toluca.

Roadways will become covered in snow and slippery this afternoon and remain hazardous through late evening.
South of a line in central Illinois from Rushville to Paris there will be snow and sleet, and south of I-70 freezing rain and sleet are expected.
Des Plaines public works workers will be busy clearing the streets and spreading salt.
