Grand Opening of North Lake Park

When/Where: Saturday, June 2, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Lake Park, Howard Avenue and Lee Street in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Celebrate the grand opening of North Lake Park, an addition to Lake Park that includes a water spray for children, two bags courts and a bocce ball court. The Park District has planned games, demonstrations, and light refreshments.

Finding Your Italian Ancestors

When/Where: Saturday, June 2, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave.

Why Go: Get the information you need to make the great leap across the ocean to start working on Italian records. The presenter, Dan Niemiec, has been plowing through the latest and greatest resources for you and will explain what has changed in those websites. Even if you have no Italian relatives, you can still learn a great deal about your relatives in the many Chicago resources available.

Pricing: Free.

Mystic Waters Open for Pre-Season

When/Where: Saturday, June 2, noon to 7 p.m. at Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center, 2025 Miner St. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center is open for pre-season, for season pass holders. Regular season hours for all Des Plaines Park District pools begin in Saturday, June 9. For hours, rates, and pool pass information, visit the Des Plaines Park District’s website.

Pricing: $104.

Photography: The Best Camera is the One that's with You

When/Where: Saturday, June 2, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave.

Why Go: Learn how to take better photos with your cell phone camera and edit them on your phone with fun and creative results. Local photographer Jerry Hug will also show you how to better share photos and videos with friends and family around the world. Participants should bring their cell phone, fully charged. Hug is an award winning photographer and a retired fine arts educator.

Pricing: Free. 

Cajun, Zydeco & Louisiana Blues Music

When/Where: Sunday, June 3, 2-3 p.m. at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave.

Why Go: Listen to The Midway Ramblers’ irresistible rhythms and learn about the unique music, history and culture of the Cajuns.
