Summer Reading Club Ice Cream Social

When/Where: Friday, Aug. 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Bring your family and friends to Library Plaza for a cold treat and some sweet music. And share a passage from your favorite book too! We invite you to step up to the microphone to read a short piece from your favorite book or poem.

Maine West Military Appreciation Night

When/Where: Friday, Aug. 24, from 6-10 p.m. at Maine West High School, 1755 S. Wolf Road in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Maine West invites veterans and current military from throughout the area to receive some well-deserved public recognition during Military Appreciation Night, as the Warriors host Chicago Urban Prep.

Pricing: Free.

Earlier: Cook County is considering expanding camping options and is welcoming input from residents.

Des Plaines School of Dance Open House and Free Classes

When/Where: Saturday, Aug. 25, 9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Administrative & Leisure Center, 2222 Birch St. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Enjoy a day of dance classes taught for all ages and abilities by our professional School of Dance staff. Classes include ballet, jazz, modern and hip-hop.

Attendees will receive a $5 coupon for any fall 2012 School of Dance class.

Pricing: Free.

Park Ridge Farmers' Market

When/Where: Saturday, Aug. 25, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prairie Avenue and Garden Street in Park Ridge.

Why Go: The Park Ridge Farmers' Market features fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, handmade soaps, flowers, potted plants and more.

Pricing: Free.

Blood pressure, blood sugar testing

When/Where: Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon at The Center of Concern, 1580 N. Northwest Highway in Park Ridge.

Why Go: Blood pressure and blood sugar testing is available at The Center of Concern at no charge and appointments are not required. Donations are welcome.
