Fire Department to Receive Radio Amps for Casino
New technology may replace radios in several years, according to the fire chief.
City council approved the purchase of radio amplifiers so emergency personnel can communicate in Rivers Casino, 3000 S. River Road, and other large buildings in Des Plaines at a meeting on Tuesday.
Des Plaines fire and police personnel discovered they had difficulty communicating in the state’s newest casino when it opened in July 2011.
Fire Chief Alan Wax said at a public safety meeting in July that the radio amplifiers would be a good solution for now, as opposed to purchasing new radios, because the technology first responders use to communicate may completely change in the near-future.
Des Plaines police and fire personnel responded to 1,699 calls at Rivers Casino during its first year in operation.
