Des Plaines, Romantically: Interesting Local Date Ideas
We've got Patch picks for some of the most interesting dates in town.
Des Plaines, we know how it is: you're busy. When you get a chance to go on a date, the last thing you want to do is waste any time getting from here to there.
In that spirit, we put together this list of the best local date options so you can spend less time getting there and more time getting romantic.
Sometimes things get so crazy that you feel like you have to reward yourself simply because you performed the nearly impossible feat of finding a few free hours. What better way to do that than undress and pay strangers to touch you in painful and otherwise illegal ways? As anyone with chronic stress can attest, therapeutic massage can be a lifesaver, and there's sometimes nothing better than being massaged with your partner at your side. Just a half-hour of massage therapy for one runs $36 at Spa Di Da.
A dinner and a show is a classic choice for any date night. Why not do it with a twist? You'll always have a chance to check out a movie, so take in some live dancing. The hula girls at Tiki Terrace put on a show that rivals anything Hollywood can come up with, and the Polynesian-themed decor transports guests to a Pacific fantasy world. It also helps that the drinks are tropical, delicious and the bartender pours them as deep as you can limbo.
Some of the best dates take place in the cheesiest spots. This museum is a bizarre piece of Americana in Des Plaines' own back yard. Making it even more bizarre is that the first McDonald's didn't open anywhere near here: the museum is a replica of the one in California. Although Ray Kroc did purchase the name to the franchise in 1955, the McDonald brothers had been operating under that name since 1940. All the same, this surreal fast food experience should give any couple plenty to talk about, from the creepy mannequins and vintage ads to the bizarre promotional video.
Sometimes a couple decides they love each other so much that they come together to nurture a life. Sometimes, that process lasts eighteen years. At the Garden Plots, that process can last 18 weeks, and at the end you get to eat what you've raised together. Try explaining that to a social worker.
The Garden Plots are available on a first-come first-serve basis starting May 1, so get in line soon.
There are nights to be intimate and quiet, and then there are nights to see and be seen. When you're in the mood for the latter, make your way to Mia Martini. This multilevel, multiroom indoor and outdoor nightclub features a lounge atmosphere and private rooms, great for double dates or lavish one on ones. The bar features a buffet, comedians, DJs and live music, emulating the urban club scene in Des Plaines.
One great way to get to know your partner is by finding out what they care about. It may seem counterintuitive to spend some of your alone time giving that time away to others, but volunteering together is a great way to strengthen bonds and develop an appreciation for what you have while at the same time helping out those less fortunate. The above link can point you in the direction of dozens of volunteer opportunities here in town and nearby.
Of course, after all that volunteering, you might need a stiff drink to relax. That's where Binny's comes in. The beverage giant has locations all over Chicagoland, and its huge selection isn't the only thing that makes it great. Often, Binny's offers tasting events that can range from wines to beers to hard liquor. It's a great shared experience for a couple to learn more, together, about wine, beer and other spirits.
At the end of the day, some of the best dates aren't sexy at all: the wholesome experience of sitting across from your sweetheart, eating sweets together, reminds you of what it's all about. Instead of heading out to one of the big chains for some ice cream, pop into a local favorite that has a lot of history, grab a sundae for two, and make some history of your own.
