Medal of Valor Awarded to Two Des Plaines Police Officers

The Des Plaines City Council acknowledged two Des Plaines Police Officers, Michael Kelly and Michael Oppegard, who were presented the Award of Valor by Police Chief William Kushner, at the Monday, January 7, 2013, City Council Meeting. In May of 2012, Officers Michael Kelly and Michael Oppegard, while conducting a narcotics investigation, attempted to take a subject into custody for possession of controlled substances. The subject became combative, and attempted to flee by entering his vehicle. While attempting to flee, the subject struck both officers with the vehicle. In the process, Officer Oppegard became entangled with the vehicle door. Fearing that Officer Oppegard was going to be run over, both officers discharged their weapons, incapacitating the driver and saving Officer Oppegard’s life. A subsequent search of both the subject and the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of heroin and money.  (pictured left to right) Des Plaines Police Commander Randy Akin, Deputy Chief Nick Treantafeles, Officer Michael Kelly, Officer Michael Oppegard, Deputy Chief Michael Kozak and Commander Louis Wittmer pose for a photograph following the presentation of the Valor Award at the Monday, January 7, 2013 City Council Meeting at City Hall.
