Maine West High School Students Experience Local Government
Three Maine West High School Advanced Placement Government Classes took part in “Government Day” activities Friday morning, March 16, 2012, in the City Council Chambers at Des Plaines City Hall. Government Day, originallylaunched seven years ago by former First Ward Alderman Patricia Beauvais and the Maine West High School Social Science Department, has become a tradition
carried on by current First Ward Alderman Patricia Haugeberg and Maine West Social Science Instructor Dan Fouts. According to Haugeberg, “The goal of Government Day is to have the students informed about the operation and challenges of their local government. It helps students appreciate what government does to serve the needs of citizens.” Prior to the students’ Government Day meeting
in the City Council Chambers where they debated and discussed local government priorities and budgeting, the students interviewed the Aldermen, Mayor Martin
J. Moylan, City Manager (acting) Jason Slowinski and the City’s Department Heads. Des Plaines cable television subscribers may view Government Day activities on cable
