Des Plaines Names Director of Community & Economic Development
Des Plaines City Manager (Acting) Jason Slowinski is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael G. Bartholomew as the director of community and economic development. Mr. Bartholomew is scheduled to begin employment on Tuesday, Dec.28.
Mr. Bartholomew comes to Des Plaines from the City of Sterling Heights, Michigan, where he has served as assistant city manager since 2007, with one of his primary duties being direct oversight of the Community and Economic Development Department. Before his appointment to assistant city manager he served as Sterling Heights' city development director (2006-2007), chief building official (1998-2006) and housing and construction manager (1997-1998).
Prior to that time, from 1994-1997, Bartholomew served as building division supervisor for the City of Oak Park, Michigan. From 1992 to 1994 he served as the chief building inspector for Redford Township, Michigan, and from 1981 to 1992 he held several positions within the Redford Township municipal structure.
He is certified by the International Code Council in various areas of construction including building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, fire prevention and property maintenance and has achieved the title of master code professional from the International Code Council. In addition, he holds the title of LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional).
Bartholomew has a bachelor's degree in community development/public administration from Central Michigan University and a master's degree in general administration from Central Michigan University. He holds certification from the Senior Executive Institute, Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, University of Virginia.

He brings with him extensive knowledge and experience in the area of community and economic development and will be an asset to the Des Plaines team."
