Des Plaines Acknowledges John P. Smyth Jubilee
Congratulations were in order for Father John P. Smyth, President of Notre Dame College Prep and former Executive Director of Maryville Academy, City of Youth, Des Plaines, who celebrated 50 years of priesthood at a special service on Friday, April 27, 2012, at Notre Dame College Prep, Niles. Des Plaines Mayor Martin J. Moylan was one of several officials to attend the commemorative event and to recognize Father Smyth on his Jubilee. Father Smyth was ordained in April 28, 1962, and began his ministry of service at Maryville Academy, during which time he was awarded the prestigious Laetare Medal. The unique award was initiated in 1883 and, over the years, was granted to individuals such as President John F. Kennedy and Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, Sr. In 2007 Father was named the President of Notre Dame College Prep. Des Plaines Mayor Martin J. Moylan thanked Father Smyth for his contributions to young people and the City of Des Plaines. “Des Plaines is proud to be home to Father Smyth, a great great man and leader. He has done so very much for young people. The City is honored to be partners with Father for more than 40 years,” Mayor Moylan said. (pictured above left to right) Father John P.
